1 oz Koala Gold Coin 2025 — Australian Gold Koala, Australia's second symbol
1 troy ounce of pure 999.9/1000 gold, struck by The Perth Mint in Western Australia. The 2025 issue is the 17th year of the new era of the Australian Gold Koala series (since 2008, after a hiatus 1989-2007 — the first era 1986-1989 was part of the "Nugget/Koala" series). The koala is Australia's "second after the kangaroo" symbol and one of the most recognizable animals in the world. Distinctive feature: a yearly changing reverse design — every issue presents a different koala in a different context (on a eucalyptus tree, with a joey, in its natural environment). Face value 100 AUD, legal tender in Australia.
Obverse — portrait of King Charles III
The obverse depicts the portrait of King Charles III by sculptor Daniel Thorne (officially approved by the Royal Australian Mint in 2023). Legal tender status in the Commonwealth of Australia.
Reverse — koala on a eucalyptus tree, individual design for 2025
The reverse depicts a koala calmly resting on a eucalyptus tree branch — its natural habitat. Koalas eat only eucalyptus leaves (averaging 500 g daily), and 80% of their diet consists of Eucalyptus species from the manna gum, ribbon gum and forest red gum genera. The tradition of yearly design change — introduced in 2008 after the series' revival — gives every issue its own, distinctive collector character.

Historical background — why does the Koala return in 2008?
The Australian Gold Koala has a fascinating history. From 1986-1989 Perth Mint struck the original "Australian Nugget" series with a koala motif, but in 1990 the mint decided to switch to the kangaroo (Australian Gold Kangaroo) — which better matched Australia's national identity (kangaroo on the state coat of arms). The koala continued mainly in platinum as "Australian Platinum Koala" (1988-2000). In 2008, in response to growing global demand for gold bullion and increased interest in Australian coins, Perth Mint decided to revive the Koala series in gold — with a yearly changing reverse design, mirroring the Kangaroo formula. Since 2008 the series has been issued continuously, and 2025 is its 17th year. It is the "younger sister" of the Kangaroo — same mint standard, but more collector-driven character thanks to a shorter history.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How does the Koala differ from the Kangaroo?
Both series are struck by The Perth Mint in 999.9/1000 (24K) and have the same face value of 100 AUD. The Koala is the "younger" series (since 2008, 17 years) with lower global recognition than the Kangaroo (since 1989, 36 years) — making it more collector-driven with upside premium potential.
Does the koala design change every year?
Yes. Since 2008 every Australian Gold Koala issue receives a unique reverse design — koala on a eucalyptus tree, with a joey, in natural environment etc.
How much gold does the coin contain?
Exactly 1 troy ounce (31.1035 g) of pure 999.9/1000 gold (24K).
Is the coin VAT-exempt?
Yes. Gold investment coins ≥900/1000 are VAT-exempt across the EU under the Investment Gold regime.
What does the koala eat?
Only eucalyptus leaves (~500 g daily). This monodiet is unique in the animal kingdom and is the reverse motif — koala typically depicted on a eucalyptus branch.
When did the previous Koala era end?
First Koala era (as Nugget-series design) ran 1986-1989. In 1990 Perth Mint switched to the kangaroo. Koala paused in gold until 2008 when it was revived as a separate series.
