$20 Liberty Head Double Eagle Gold Coin | 1850-1907 | U.S. Mint
The $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle is one of the most celebrated and widely collected gold coins in American history. Struck by the United States Mint from 1850 to 1907, it was born directly out of the California Gold Rush — the flood of newly discovered gold that transformed the U.S. economy and created an urgent need for large-denomination coinage. Made from .900 fine gold (21.6-carat), the coin weighs 33.44 g and contains 0.9675 troy ounces (30.09 g) of pure gold — making it the largest regular-issue gold coin the United States ever produced for circulation.

About the Liberty Head Double Eagle
The obverse was designed by James Barton Longacre, Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, depicting a Liberty Head — a classically draped female figure wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The reverse presents a heraldic eagle bearing a shield on its breast, an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other, with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM above and the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS below.
The Double Eagle was produced at multiple U.S. Mint branches — Philadelphia, San Francisco (from 1854), New Orleans, Carson City and Denver — making the series a rich field for date-and-mintmark collectors. Production ran continuously until 1907, when President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to replace the design, resulting in the even more celebrated Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much gold does the $20 Liberty Head contain? A: The coin weighs 33.44 g at .900 fineness, giving 0.9675 troy ounces (approximately 30.09 g) of pure gold — just under a full troy ounce.
Q: Why is it called the "Double Eagle"? A: The $10 gold coin was called the Eagle; the $20 piece — worth twice as much — was therefore the Double Eagle. The term was used officially from its first issue in 1850.
Q: What condition are these coins in? A: As genuine circulated originals struck over a 57-year period, the coins show wear consistent with their age and use. Exact grade varies; if a specific grade is required, please contact us before ordering.
Q: Is this coin VAT-exempt in Europe? A: Yes. At .900 fineness and above the EU 1 g threshold, the Liberty Head Double Eagle qualifies as investment-grade gold and is VAT-exempt in Poland and across the European Union.
