How Much Is a Gold Sovereign Worth? Value, Weight and Sizes
2026-09-24 16:10:00
Author: Paweł Kucharzak, GoldInvest24 | 24 September 2026
Reading time: 8–10 minutes | Prices with a quote date
A full gold sovereign contains 7.3224 g of pure gold, worth about £753 at today's spot price. A half sovereign holds £377 of gold and a quarter sovereign £188. The figures are based on a spot price of $4,257.10 per troy ounce (Kitco, 24 September 2026) converted at 1.3301 USD per GBP. That is the melt value — what a dealer pays or charges for a particular coin also depends on its size, date and condition, which the sections below explain.
Gold sovereign value by size
Every sovereign is struck in 22 carat gold (916.7 fine), so its value is simply its fine gold weight multiplied by the price of a gram of gold — £102.90 at today's rate.
| Coin | Total weight | Fine gold | Gold value today | Face value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quarter sovereign | 1.997 g | 1.830 g | £188 | 25p |
| Half sovereign | 3.994 g | 3.661 g | £377 | 50p |
| Full sovereign | 7.988 g | 7.322 g | £753 | £1 |
| Double sovereign | 15.976 g | 14.645 g | £1,507 | £2 |
| Five-pound sovereign (quintuple) | 39.940 g | 36.612 g | £3,767 | £5 |
Calculation: $4,257.10 per troy ounce ÷ 1.3301 USD/GBP ÷ 31.1035 g × fine gold weight. The gold price changes every trading day — the current figure is on our gold price page, and the full range of sizes is in the gold sovereign category.
How much does a gold sovereign weigh?
A full sovereign weighs 7.98805 g, measures 22.05 mm across and 1.52 mm thick. Of that weight, 7.3224 g — or 0.2354 troy ounces — is pure gold. The remaining 8.3% is copper, which makes the coin harder and far more resistant to wear than a 24 carat coin. That is why sovereigns from the 1890s still turn up in fine condition.
The weight has not changed since 1817. A Victorian sovereign and a 2027 Charles III sovereign contain exactly the same amount of gold, which is what makes the coin easy to price: size, not year, sets the metal value. If you want to compare the sovereign with coins weighed in troy ounces, our guide to the troy ounce in grams explains the conversion.
Why a sovereign sells for more than its gold
Melt value is the floor, not the price you see in a shop. Three things add to it:
- Minting cost. Striking a 7.98 g coin costs almost as much as striking a one-ounce coin, so the cost per gram of gold is higher. A sovereign usually carries a larger premium over spot than a one-ounce Britannia or a 100 g bar.
- Year and mint mark. Most sovereigns trade as bullion, but some dates are scarce. The 1819 sovereign is one of the rarest British gold coins, and 1937 George VI sovereigns were struck only as proofs. Coins from the branch mints — marked S (Sydney), M (Melbourne), P (Perth), C (Ottawa), SA (Pretoria) or I (Bombay) — can also carry a collector premium.
- Condition and finish. Proof sovereigns in their original case sell well above bullion coins of the same year. Heavy wear, cleaning marks or damage move a coin back towards melt value.
For a pre-owned bullion sovereign in average condition, the gold content is what counts. For a proof or a scarce date, a numismatic valuation matters more than the gold price.
Half sovereign value
A half sovereign contains 3.661 g of pure gold, worth about £377 today. It was struck regularly from 1817 until 1915, then only occasionally until the Royal Mint resumed annual production in 1980. Edward VII and George V half sovereigns are the most common pre-owned examples.
The smaller size works in both directions: it is a lower entry point, but the premium per gram is higher than for a full sovereign. Two half sovereigns contain exactly the same gold as one full sovereign and usually cost more.
Selling a gold sovereign — what dealers pay
A dealer buying a sovereign starts from the melt value and adjusts for how easily the coin can be resold:
| What you sell | How it is valued | Relative to melt value |
|---|---|---|
| Bullion sovereign, any year, average condition | Gold content | close to melt value |
| Recent Royal Mint sovereign, uncirculated | Gold content | close to melt value |
| Proof sovereign with box and certificate | Collector market | can be well above melt |
| Scarce date or mint mark | Numismatic valuation | depends on the individual coin |
| Damaged, holed or mounted in jewellery | Scrap gold | below melt value |
Before selling, it is worth knowing the melt figure from the table above — it lets you check any offer within seconds. The terms on which we buy back bullion coins are described on the sell gold and silver page. A sovereign that has been soldered into a ring or pendant is treated as 22 carat scrap, whose value per gram is covered in our article on gold and silver purity.
Tax: VAT and Capital Gains Tax
Sovereigns meet the definition of investment gold, so they are exempt from VAT when bought in the UK and across the EU. Because they are British legal tender, sovereigns are also exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents — a feature shared with the Britannia but not with foreign coins such as the Krugerrand or the Maple Leaf, or with gold bars.
Tax treatment depends on your individual circumstances and where you are resident; we do not give tax advice. Silver, platinum and palladium coins are not VAT-exempt. For a comparison with other legal tender gold, see our gold Britannia range.
Sovereign or one-ounce coin?
| Feature | Full sovereign | 1 oz gold coin |
|---|---|---|
| Fine gold | 7.32 g (0.2354 oz) | 31.10 g (1 oz) |
| Gold value today | £753 | £3,200 |
| Premium per gram | Higher | Lower |
| Divisibility | Sell one coin at a time | Larger single unit |
| UK CGT | Exempt (legal tender) | Exempt only for Britannia |
The two are not competitors so much as different tools: a sovereign suits smaller amounts and partial sales, a one-ounce coin keeps more of each pound in the metal itself.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a gold sovereign worth?
A full gold sovereign contains 7.3224 g of pure gold, worth about £753 at a spot price of $4,257.10 per ounce on 24 September 2026. Dealers charge more than this when selling and pay close to it when buying bullion sovereigns in average condition.
How much is a half sovereign worth?
A half sovereign holds 3.661 g of pure gold, worth about £377 at the 24 September 2026 spot price. Scarce dates, proofs and coins in exceptional condition can be worth more than their gold content.
How much does a gold sovereign weigh?
A full sovereign weighs 7.98805 g and contains 7.3224 g of pure gold. It is 22 carat (916.7 fine), 22.05 mm in diameter and 1.52 mm thick. The weight has been unchanged since 1817.
Are all sovereigns 22 carat gold?
Yes. Every gold sovereign struck since 1817 is 22 carat gold, 916.7 parts gold per thousand, with copper making up the rest. The Royal Mint also strikes silver sovereigns, but those are a separate product.
What year are sovereigns most valuable?
The 1819 sovereign is among the rarest, and 1937 George VI sovereigns exist only as proofs. Coins from branch mints and low-mintage years can also carry a premium. Most other dates trade close to their gold value.
How much will I get if I sell a gold sovereign?
For a bullion sovereign in average condition, expect an offer close to its melt value — about £753 for a full sovereign at the 24 September 2026 spot price. Proofs and scarce dates are valued individually.
Do you pay Capital Gains Tax on sovereigns?
UK residents do not pay Capital Gains Tax on sovereigns because they are British legal tender. Sovereigns are also exempt from VAT as investment gold. Your own tax position depends on your circumstances.
Is a sovereign worth more than its gold?
When bought new, yes — the price includes minting and distribution costs, which are higher per gram than for larger coins. When sold, a bullion sovereign is usually valued close to its gold content unless the date is scarce.
Summary
A gold sovereign is worth its gold content first: 7.3224 g of pure gold, about £753 at the 24 September 2026 spot price. A half sovereign is worth about £377 and a quarter about £188. The weight has not changed since 1817, so the year only matters when it is scarce or when the coin is a proof.
On top of the melt value sits the premium for minting a small coin, which is why the sovereign costs more per gram than a one-ounce coin — and why it is also easier to sell in small amounts.
