Palladium is quoted per troy ounce — 31.1035 grams — in US dollars, the same unit as gold, silver and platinum. The chart below tracks the spot market. What you pay for a bar is spot plus a premium, and in the United Kingdom plus VAT.

Who sets the benchmark palladium price

Alongside continuous spot trading there is a formal daily benchmark, the LBMA Palladium Price, set by electronic auction. Administration of the platinum and palladium benchmarks changed hands recently: ICE Benchmark Administration took over from the London Metal Exchange on 1 July 2026. Sources that still name the LME have not been updated.

Palladium price per gram, ounce and kilogram

One troy ounce is exactly 31.1035 g.

Unit Conversion from the ounce price Worked example at USD 1,000 per ounce
1 gram ounce price ÷ 31.1035 USD 32.15
10 grams ounce price ÷ 3.11035 USD 321.51
100 grams ounce price × 3.21507 USD 3,215.07
1 kilogram ounce price × 32.1507 USD 32,150.70

The example uses a round USD 1,000 so the arithmetic is visible. Substitute the live figure from the chart.

Why palladium bars are 999.5

The London Platinum and Palladium Market sets the good delivery standard for wholesale metal: plates and ingots from 1 kg to 6 kg at a minimum fineness of 99.95 per cent. Retail palladium bars follow that figure, which is why they are marked 999.5 rather than the 999.9 familiar from gold. Valcambi states 999.5 for both platinum and palladium on its own minted-bar page.

Accreditation belongs to the refinery rather than to the individual bar. Valcambi, MKS PAMP, Argor-Heraeus, Heraeus and Metalor are all on the current LPPM palladium good delivery list; Umicore appears there only under former refiners.

What moves the palladium price

Palladium has no monetary role. Demand is dominated by autocatalysts in petrol engines, with the balance in electronics, dentistry and chemical catalysis, so the price responds to vehicle production and emissions regulation rather than to interest rates or currency moves.

Two consequences follow. Palladium is more volatile than gold, because industrial demand is cyclical and mine supply cannot respond quickly. And it is substitutable: platinum and palladium can be interchanged in some catalyst formulations, so a sustained price gap between the two metals tends to pull demand toward the cheaper one. That relationship is why the platinum and palladium charts are worth reading together.

Why the product price is never the chart price

Spot is the price of unfabricated metal in wholesale quantity. A bar has been refined to retail fineness, pressed, serial-numbered, sealed, insured and shipped. Those steps are paid for in the premium, which is proportionally largest on the smallest bars because the manufacturing cost per piece barely changes with size. Palladium adds VAT on top, which gold does not carry.

Tax status of palladium

The UK VAT exemption for bullion covers investment gold only, defined in VAT Notice 701/21 as gold of a purity of not less than 995 thousandths in bar or wafer form, or a qualifying gold coin. Palladium is standard-rated — 20 per cent in the United Kingdom, 23 per cent in Poland. Capital gains relief follows sterling legal tender, so palladium bars carry none. Statement of the published rules, not tax advice.

Questions about the palladium price

How do I work out the palladium price per gram?

Divide the quoted ounce price by 31.1035. At USD 1,000 per ounce that is USD 32.15 per gram.

Who administers the LBMA Palladium Price?

ICE Benchmark Administration, which took over from the London Metal Exchange on 1 July 2026.

Why are palladium bars 999.5 rather than 999.9?

Because the London good delivery minimum for palladium is 99.95 per cent, and the refineries produce to that standard.

Why is palladium more volatile than gold?

Because demand is industrial and cyclical — dominated by autocatalysts — while mine supply cannot adjust quickly.

Does palladium carry VAT?

Yes, at the standard rate of 20 per cent in the UK and 23 per cent in Poland. Only investment gold is exempt.
