1/4 oz Gold Coins
Number of products: 24A quarter ounce gold coin holds 7.78 g of fine gold. It is the format most buyers reach for when a full ounce is more than they want to commit at once but a tenth feels too small to be worth the premium. This category lists 29 quarter ounce coins across current 2026 dates, earlier dates and mixed-year lots.
Diameters run from 20.0 mm on the Maple Leaf to 22.06 mm on the Krugerrand, and fineness from 916.7 to 999.9. The gold content is identical in all of them; the alloy, the size and the tax status are what differ.
The same 7.78 g, six ways
Every coin on this page contains a quarter of a troy ounce — 7.78 g of fine gold. The mints differ in how they present it. The table below sets the six main series side by side using the specifications published on each product page.
| Series | Fineness | Diameter | Face value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Krugerrand | 916.7 | 22.06 mm | none |
| Britannia | 999.9 | 22.0 mm | 25 GBP |
| American Eagle | 916.7 | 22.0 mm | 10 USD |
| Maple Leaf | 999.9 | 20.0 mm | 10 CAD |
| Vienna Philharmonic | 999.9 | 22.0 mm | 25 EUR |
| Australian Kangaroo | 999.9 | 20.1 mm | 25 AUD |
The Krugerrand is the widest of the six and the only one without a face value — it is South African legal tender by statute rather than by a denomination struck on the coin.
Where a quarter ounce sits on premium
Minting a coin costs roughly the same whatever the weight, so the smaller the coin, the larger that cost looms as a share of the price. A quarter ounce carries a higher premium over spot than a 1/2 oz gold coin or a 1 oz gold coin, and a lower one than a 1/10 oz gold coin.
What you buy for that premium is divisibility. Four quarter ounces let you sell in stages; one ounce does not.
Which quarter ounce coins carry the UK tax exemption
Only Royal Mint issues. In this category that means the quarter ounce Britannia and the Royal Mint Tudor Beasts and British Lion issues, exempt from UK capital gains tax under HMRC Capital Gains Manual CG78305 and TCGA 1992 section 21(1)(b) as sterling legal tender. The Krugerrand, Maple Leaf, American Eagle, Philharmonic, Kangaroo and Panda are chargeable assets for UK taxpayers.
On VAT the answer is the same for all of them: gold of at least 995 fineness is exempt across the EU under Council Directive 2006/112/EC, and in Poland under art. 122.

Questions buyers ask
How much gold is in a 1/4 oz gold coin?
7.78 g of fine gold, a quarter of the 31.1035 g troy ounce. Every coin in this category holds the same amount.
Which 1/4 oz gold coin is the smallest?
The Maple Leaf at 20.0 mm across, followed by the Kangaroo at 20.1 mm. The Krugerrand is the widest at 22.06 mm, because the copper alloy adds volume.
Are quarter ounce coins worth the higher premium?
It depends on what you want from the holding. The premium per gram is higher than on a full ounce, and in exchange you can sell in smaller steps. Buyers building a position gradually often mix formats for that reason.
Which 1/4 oz gold coins are free of UK capital gains tax?
The Royal Mint issues — Britannia, Tudor Beasts and British Lion. Foreign coins such as the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf are chargeable assets for UK taxpayers.
Do quarter ounce gold coins carry VAT?
No. All are at least 995 fine, which places them under the EU exemption in Council Directive 2006/112/EC and art. 122 in Poland.
