1/4 oz Gold Maple Leaf — .9999 fine

A quarter troy ounce of .9999 gold, 7.776 g, 20.00 mm across, face value 10 Canadian dollars. The Maple Leaf was the first bullion coin struck at four nines fineness, and the standard has held since 1982.

Mixed-year stock. Coins dated 2013 onwards carry the micro-engraved leaf, and those dated 2015 onwards the radial lines; earlier pieces have neither, and are the same gold.

Three security features

The Royal Canadian Mint builds three anti-counterfeiting measures into the bullion Maple Leaf: precision radial lines machined into both fields, a laser micro-engraved maple leaf carrying the last two digits of the year, and the mint’s Bullion DNA authentication. The micro-engraved leaf appeared in 2013, the radial lines in 2015.

Which monarch is on the obverse

Coins up to 2022 carry Queen Elizabeth II. From 2023 the obverse is the effigy of King Charles III by Steven Rosati. Mixed-year stock ships as available.

VAT and UK capital gains tax

HMRC treats a coin minted after 1800 as investment gold if it is at least 900 thousandths fine, is or has been legal tender in its country of origin, and normally sells at no more than 180 per cent of the open market value of its gold (VAT Notice 701/21A). The Maple Leaf is .9999 fine, Canadian legal tender and sold on the gold price, so it meets all three tests.

Capital gains tax is a separate matter. The UK exemption follows sterling legal tender, so it covers Sovereigns and Britannias but not a Canadian coin. This is a statement of the published rule, not tax advice — your own position depends on your circumstances.

Questions buyers ask

What is the micro-engraved leaf? A laser-engraved maple leaf, visible under magnification, containing the last two digits of the year. It has been on the coin since 2013.

Why is no thickness listed? Because the Royal Canadian Mint does not publish one. Figures circulating on dealer sites are not mint-confirmed.

Can I choose the year? No. Mixed-year stock ships as available.

Is four nines gold softer? Yes. Pure gold marks more easily than the 22 carat alloy used in a Krugerrand, which is why every coin ships in a capsule.
