Gold for a wedding
Number of products: 38A wedding gift in gold is given by adults to adults, so it can be larger and it does not need to be explained. The formats that fit start around a half ounce and run to a full ounce, in bars or in bullion coins, all sealed and all exempt from VAT.
Two structures are common: one substantial piece, or a set that the couple can divide. Both are listed here alongside the smaller formats from the wider gift range.
One piece or a set
For a single gift, a 1/2 oz PAMP Fortuna bar holds 15.55 g and sits in a CertiPAMP card; a 1 oz Britannia gold bar from The Royal Mint is the British option at 31.10 g. Among coins, the 1 oz formats — Britannia, Krugerrand, Maple Leaf, Philharmonic — are the recognisable choices.
For a gift from a group, or one intended to be shared, the 25 x 1 g PAMP Multigram separates into twenty five one gram bars by hand. A couple can keep it whole or split it.
Bars and coins are taxed differently in the UK
Both are exempt from VAT: gold of at least 995 fineness is zero-rated across the EU under Council Directive 2006/112/EC, and in Poland under art. 122.
Capital gains tax is where they diverge for UK buyers. Royal Mint sterling coins such as the Britannia are exempt under HMRC Capital Gains Manual CG78305 and TCGA 1992 section 21(1)(b) because they are legal tender. Bars are not — including the Britannia bar, which carries the name but is not a coin. If the recipient is a UK taxpayer and the amount is meaningful, that distinction is worth making before choosing.
Presentation
Minted bars come sealed in a certified assay card with the serial number visible; coins arrive in capsules. Neither should be opened. Where the gift is meant to look like a present rather than a holding, the PAMP motif bars — the 5 g Arabian Camel pendant bar among them — are struck as objects rather than plain ingots.
On premium
Larger formats carry a lower premium over spot, so a wedding gift is the occasion where the money goes furthest into metal. A 1 oz piece is close to the efficient end; below 10 g the minting cost starts to dominate.
Questions buyers ask
How much gold is usual for a wedding gift?
Commonly between a half ounce and a full ounce, so 15.55 g to 31.10 g. Group gifts are often larger or take the form of a divisible multigram set.
Is a gold bar or a gold coin the better wedding gift?
For UK recipients a Royal Mint coin has a tax advantage: sterling coins are exempt from capital gains tax, bars are not. Otherwise bars carry a slightly lower premium for the same weight.
Is the Britannia gold bar exempt from UK capital gains tax?
No. Only Royal Mint coins are exempt, because the exemption rests on legal tender status. The Britannia bar carries the name but is not a coin.
Can a wedding gift in gold be split between the couple?
Yes, with a multigram set. The 25 x 1 g PAMP Multigram separates into individual one gram bars without tools.
