Noah's Ark silver coins

Number of products: 10

Noah's Ark is the widest size range of any silver series stocked here: 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz and 1 kg, all in 999 silver. Most bullion series offer the ounce and nothing else.

That range is the reason to read this page. The same coin at six sizes makes the cost of buying silver in small pieces unusually visible. Live quotes on the silver price page.

All are 999 fine. A kilo coin holds slightly more than 32 troy ounces, which is worth knowing when comparing it against a stack of ounce coins.

What the size range actually costs you

Striking a coin — blank preparation, die work, pressing, capsule, handling — costs broadly the same whether the blank weighs a quarter of an ounce or a full ounce. Silver is cheap by weight, so that fixed cost lands very differently across the range.

In practice: a quarter-ounce coin carries roughly four times the manufacturing cost per ounce of silver that a one-ounce coin does. Buy four quarter-ounce coins instead of one ounce coin and you pay for four striking operations, four capsules and four handling steps to end up with the same 31.1 g of metal.

The arithmetic runs the other way at the top of the range. A 1 kg coin spreads one striking operation over 32 ounces of silver, so its premium per ounce is the lowest in the series by a wide margin.

None of this makes the small sizes a mistake. Fractional coins are easier to sell in small amounts and easier to give as a gift, and that is what the extra buys. It is simply worth knowing what it costs before choosing.

Why 999 rather than 999.9

The London Good Delivery standard for silver sets a minimum of 999.0, so 999 is what the wholesale market runs on and what most silver bullion is struck to. In gold, 999.9 is the retail baseline; in silver it is a differentiator rather than a starting point. The difference is one part in a thousand.

Tax position

VAT: silver is not investment gold. The exemption in Article 344 of Directive 2006/112/EC, and in the United Kingdom under VAT Notice 701/21, covers gold only. Silver coins are sold at the standard rate — 23 per cent in Poland, 20 per cent in the United Kingdom.

UK capital gains tax: not exempt. HMRC's Capital Gains Manual at CG78305 states that coins which are currency but not sterling are chargeable assets. Noah's Ark coins are not sterling legal tender, so the relief that covers Britannias and Sovereigns does not reach them. General information, not tax advice.

Questions buyers ask

Which size gives the most silver for the money?

The 1 kg coin, by a clear margin — one striking operation spread across 32.15 troy ounces. The 1/4 oz coin is at the opposite end, carrying roughly four times the manufacturing cost per ounce of a one-ounce coin.

How much silver is in the kilo coin?

One thousand grams, which is 32.1507 troy ounces — slightly more than 32 one-ounce coins.

What fineness are they?

999. The London standard for silver requires only 999.0, so 999 is the norm across the metal rather than an economy grade.

Are Noah's Ark coins exempt from UK capital gains tax?

No. The exemption follows sterling legal tender, and these coins are not sterling.

Do you buy Noah's Ark coins back?

Yes, quoted against the current silver price. See the buyback page.
