Gold for a christening
Number of products: 38A christening present in gold is usually opened by the parents and put away for twenty years. That makes two things matter more than they would for any other gift: the piece has to be small enough to be a keepsake rather than an investment, and it has to stay sealed so it can be sold without questions decades later.
The formats that fit are 0.5 g to 2.5 g minted bars in certified assay cards. Larger pieces from the same range are listed too, if the gift is from several people together.
What suits a christening
The smallest sealed formats. A 0.5 g Valcambi gold bar is the entry point; a 1 g PAMP Fortuna bar is the most common choice and the one most people recognise. For something less plain, the 2.5 g Lady of Liberty bar has a struck motif rather than a bare ingot face.
All of them arrive in a sealed CertiPAMP or Kinebar card with the serial number printed on it. That card is what a dealer checks in 2046, so it should not be opened.
Why small formats cost more per gram
Striking, sealing and shipping a bar costs roughly the same whatever it weighs. On a 1 g piece that fixed cost is carried by one gram of metal, so the premium over spot is the highest in the shop — several times what you would pay on a 100 g gold bar.
This is the trade-off of a giftable size, and it is worth knowing before choosing. If the intention is purely to put value aside for the child rather than to hand over an object, a larger bar bought and stored is more efficient.
A gift from several people
Where relatives club together, the 25 x 1 g PAMP Multigram works differently from a single larger bar: it separates by hand into twenty five one gram pieces, so the gift can be divided later without a dealer.
Tax
Gold at 995 fineness and above is exempt from VAT across the EU under Council Directive 2006/112/EC and in Poland under art. 122. Everything here qualifies. UK capital gains tax exemption is a separate rule and applies only to Royal Mint sterling coins — not to bars, whichever refinery struck them.
Questions buyers ask
How much gold is a normal christening gift?
Most fall between 0.5 g and 2.5 g. A 1 g bar is the most frequent single choice; larger amounts are usually a joint gift from several people.
Should the gold be kept in its sealed card?
Yes. The card carries the refiner's assay and the serial number, and an unopened seal is what makes resale straightforward twenty years later.
Is a coin or a bar better for a christening?
A bar in a sealed card is the more common choice at this size and costs less per gram than a coin of the same weight. A coin is worth considering if legal tender status matters to you.
Does the gift carry VAT?
No. All the gold here is at least 995 fine, which places it under the EU exemption in Council Directive 2006/112/EC and art. 122 in Poland.
