1/10 oz Gold Coins

Number of products: 19

A tenth ounce gold coin holds 3.11 g of fine gold in a disc 16.0 to 16.5 mm across — smaller than a UK five pence piece. It is the cheapest way into a recognised bullion series and the format most often bought as a gift or a first purchase. This category lists 22 coins.

All six main mints strike this size. The Krugerrand and the American Eagle are 916.7 Crown Gold; the Britannia, Maple Leaf, Vienna Philharmonic and Kangaroo are 999.9 fine. Gold content is 3.11 g in every one of them.

Six mints, one tenth of an ounce

Each coin here contains 3.11 g of fine gold — a tenth of the 31.1035 g troy ounce. The specifications below come from the product pages in this category.

Series Fineness Diameter Thickness Face value
Krugerrand 916.7 16.5 mm approx. 1.35 mm none
Britannia 999.9 16.5 mm 0.95 mm 10 GBP
American Eagle 916.7 16.5 mm 1.19 mm 5 USD
Maple Leaf 999.9 16.0 mm 1.13 mm 5 CAD
Vienna Philharmonic 999.9 16.0 mm 1.2 mm 10 EUR
Australian Kangaroo 999.9 16.0 mm approx. 1.35 mm 15 AUD

The Britannia is the thinnest at 0.95 mm because it is 24 carat and carries no alloy; the 22 carat coins need more material for the same gold content.

The premium is the trade-off

A tenth ounce carries the highest premium over spot of any coin format, because the cost of striking, capsuling and shipping a coin barely changes with weight and here it is spread over 3.11 g. Expect a materially higher percentage over metal value than on a 1/4 oz gold coin or a 1 oz gold coin.

What it buys is a low entry point and easy resale in small amounts. For accumulating metal at the lowest cost per gram, gold bars are the more efficient route.

Which tenth ounce coins carry the UK tax exemption

Only Royal Mint issues. Here that is the tenth ounce Britannia, exempt from UK capital gains tax under HMRC Capital Gains Manual CG78305 and TCGA 1992 section 21(1)(b) as sterling legal tender. The Krugerrand, Maple Leaf, American Eagle, Philharmonic and Kangaroo are chargeable assets for UK taxpayers.

All of them are at least 995 fine, so all are exempt from VAT across the EU under Council Directive 2006/112/EC and in Poland under art. 122.

Series available in this format

Tenth ounce coins are listed here from the Krugerrand, Britannia, Maple Leaf, Vienna Philharmonic, American Eagle and Australian Kangaroo series, together with Lunar issues. Mixed-year lots hold the same metal as current dates and usually price closer to spot.

Questions buyers ask

How much gold is in a 1/10 oz gold coin?

3.11 g of fine gold, a tenth of the 31.1035 g troy ounce. This is the same across every series in the category.

How big is a 1/10 oz gold coin?

Between 16.0 and 16.5 mm across, and roughly 1 mm thick. That is smaller in diameter than a UK five pence piece.

Why is the premium on a tenth ounce so high?

Because minting, capsuling and handling cost close to the same for any coin, and on a tenth ounce that fixed cost is carried by only 3.11 g of gold. The percentage over spot is therefore the highest of any coin format.

Which 1/10 oz gold coin is free of UK capital gains tax?

The Britannia, as a Royal Mint sterling coin. The other series here are chargeable assets for UK taxpayers.

Is a tenth ounce coin a sensible gift?

It is the most common gift format in gold, because it is a recognisable bullion coin at the lowest entry price. The trade-off is the premium, which is not recovered on resale.
