How to Clean Silver and Gold at Home — and What You Should Never Touch

A blackened chain, a dull ring, an inherited canteen of cutlery that has turned grey — silver tarnishes and gold loses its shine. There are a dozen household remedies for this and most of them genuinely work. There is, however, one category of object you should never clean under any circumstances: bullion coins and bars. A polished silver bullion coin loses between 20 and 40 per cent of its value at resale. This guide covers what you can clean, with what, and where the line falls beyond which cleaning becomes the destruction of wealth.
Why silver tarnishes and gold goes dull
These are two entirely different processes and each calls for a different approach.
Silver tarnishes through a chemical reaction. Silver reacts with sulphur compounds present in the air, in cosmetics, in certain foods (eggs, onions, mustard) and in human perspiration. The result is silver sulphide (Ag₂S) — the dark layer known as tarnish or patina. It is not dirt but a wafer-thin layer of a new compound on the surface of the metal. The higher the humidity and the more sulphur in the surroundings, the faster the process runs.
Gold does not oxidise at all. Pure gold (999.9) is chemically inert — it reacts with neither oxygen, sulphur nor water. When gold jewellery looks dull, the cause lies in the alloying metals: silver and copper added to make 9-carat, 14-carat or 18-carat alloys harder. Those oxidise. On top of that sits ordinary residue from cosmetics, skin oils and dust.
The practical conclusion: gold of 999.9 fineness never needs cleaning. Sterling silver (925) and lower-carat gold need it more often, precisely because they contain more of the reactive metals.
What you must never clean — bullion coins and bars
This is the most important section of the guide. If you own silver bullion coins, gold coins or bars, leave them alone.

The rule is simple and admits no exception: with coins and bars what matters is the metal and the state of preservation, not the shine. Dark toning on a silver coin from 2015 does not reduce its worth by a single penny — the buyer is paying for 31.1 grams of silver and for originality. That same coin treated with silver polish is worth noticeably less.
If the toning bothers you visually, the answer lies in prevention rather than removal: a protective capsule, a mint tube or the original packaging. Many silver bars are supplied sealed in blister packs for exactly this reason.
How to clean silver — household methods that work
Everything below applies to jewellery and cutlery only — not to coins and not to bars.
Bicarbonate of soda and aluminium foil — the electrochemical method
The most effective household remedy, because it removes no metal at all — it reverses the chemical reaction instead. Line a bowl with aluminium foil, shiny side up, add two tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda), pour over hot water — not boiling — and place the silver so that it touches the foil. The blackening lifts within two to five minutes. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.
Why it works: aluminium has a greater affinity for sulphur than silver does. The silver sulphide breaks down, the sulphur migrates to the foil, and the silver returns to its original state with no loss of substance. A teaspoon of salt speeds the reaction further.
Bicarbonate of soda paste
For individual, heavily tarnished pieces. Mix bicarbonate with a little water into a thick paste, apply with a soft cloth, rub gently, rinse. The method is mildly abrasive — avoid it on engraved items and on silver-plated pieces, where the silver layer is only a few microns thick.
Toothpaste — plain white only, no whitening agents
It works, but it is the most abrasive of the household options. Gel and whitening formulas contain hard polishing particles that leave hairline scratches. If you use it at all, use plain white paste with no granules, applied with a finger and only briefly.
Vinegar and salt
Half a cup of vinegar, a tablespoon of salt, fifteen minutes of soaking. Effective against light tarnish. Do not use on silver set with stones — the acid can attack settings and will damage pearls, coral and amber.
Silver dips and impregnated cloths
Silver dips act quickly and thoroughly but can be aggressive; observe the contact time the manufacturer specifies. Impregnated polishing cloths are the gentlest option for routine care: they lift early tarnish and leave a protective film behind.
Ultrasonic cleaners
Useful for intricate pieces and chains. Not suitable for items with set stones — the vibration can loosen settings — nor for pearls, opals and emeralds.
Cleaning sterling silver and silver-plated items
Sterling silver, hallmarked 925, contains 92.5 per cent silver and 7.5 per cent other metals, usually copper. That copper is what drives most of the tarnishing. All the methods above apply to sterling without reservation.
Silver plate is a different matter entirely. The silver layer measures only a few microns, and abrasive polish wears straight through it to the base metal underneath — an irreversible loss. On plated pieces use only the electrochemical method and impregnated cloths, never paste and never a brush.
Cutlery deserves a note of its own. It tarnishes faster than jewellery because it meets sulphur-rich foods regularly. The foil-and-bicarbonate method suits it particularly well, since it treats many pieces at once without leaving polishing marks. Dry cutlery completely straight after cleaning — water spots dry into fresh discolouration.
How to clean gold and gold jewellery
Gold jewellery calls for a far gentler approach than silver, because the problem is deposits rather than oxidation.

White gold is a special case. Its characteristic colour comes from a rhodium plating applied by electrolysis. That plating wears away after a few years of wear and the yellowish tone of the underlying alloy begins to show through. No amount of cleaning will correct this — the piece needs re-plating by a jeweller.

Storing metals so cleaning never becomes necessary
Prevention is cheaper and safer than cleaning, particularly where investment metals are concerned.
Coins and bars: leave them in their original packaging — capsule, mint tube, blister or certificate card. If the packaging is missing, buy a capsule sized to the diameter. Store somewhere dry and away from sulphur sources: rubber, wool, certain adhesives and unbleached paper. A sachet of silica gel in the box absorbs moisture and slows toning considerably.
Silver jewellery: airtight zip bags or cases lined with anti-tarnish fabric. Avoid the bathroom — humidity accelerates tarnishing. Remove pieces before showering, swimming and applying cosmetics.
Gold jewellery: separate compartments, so that harder pieces do not scratch softer ones. Gold of 999.9 fineness is remarkably soft and marks under a fingernail.
