Britannia as a symbol of Great Britain has its roots in coins of the Roman Empire — it was already minted during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (2nd c. AD) on provincial coins of Roman Britain. The modern series of Britannia gold coins from The Royal Mint was launched in 1987, twenty years after the Krugerrand (1967) and eight years after the Maple Leaf (1979). The introduction of the series was Britain's response to the growing interest in the global bullion market from classic national coins.
The first Britannia issues from 1987-2012 were struck in the Crown Gold alloy of 916.7/1000 fineness (22 karat), in line with the traditional British Sovereign standard used by the Royal Mint since 1817. In 2013 the Royal Mint raised the fineness to 999.9/1000 (.9999) — matching the then-competing series Maple Leaf (.9999), Kangaroo (.9999) and Vienna Philharmonic (.9999). The decision required a change of minting technology from alloy to pure gold.
