Four security features on one coin

The Royal Mint builds four checks into the Britannia: micro-text around the design, a latent image that shifts between a padlock and a trident as you tilt the coin, tincture lines picking out the Union flag on Britannia's shield, and surface animation that makes a wave pattern move as the coin turns.

All four are visible without instruments beyond a loupe for the micro-text, which is unusual on a bullion coin.

VAT and — unusually — no capital gains tax

The Britannia meets HMRC's tests for an investment gold coin in VAT Notice 701/21A: minted after 1800, at least 900 thousandths fine, legal tender in its country of origin, and normally sold at no more than 180 per cent of the open market value of its gold. So it is exempt from VAT.

It also carries a GBP 10 face value in sterling, which makes it UK legal tender. HMRC's capital gains exemption follows sterling currency, so for UK residents a Britannia sits in the same category as the Sovereign — unlike a Maple Leaf, Krugerrand or Philharmonic. This is the published rule, not tax advice; your own position depends on your circumstances.

Questions buyers ask

Is the Britannia free of UK capital gains tax? It is UK legal tender with a sterling face value, which is the test HMRC applies for the exemption on coins.

How do I check the latent image? Tilt the coin. The image alternates between a padlock and a trident.

Who designed Britannia? Philip Nathan. The design has been on the coin since 1987.
