What the issuer publishes — and what it does not

This is the part most listings skip. Specifications for the Somali Elephant circulate widely across dealer sites: a striking mint, a diameter, a face value in shillings, a mintage limit. Those figures are consistent from site to site, but they are not traceable to the issuer.

Checked directly for this page: the Central Bank of Somalia publishes no specification, mintage or announcement for the coin on its own website, and the Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt — the Bavarian State Mint, named by most dealers as the producer — does not mention Somalia, the African Wildlife series or an elephant coin anywhere on its own site. Searches on that site for both terms return nothing.

That does not mean the circulating figures are wrong. It means no primary source stands behind them, so they are not repeated here as fact. What can be stated is what we sell: one troy ounce of 999 silver, 2026 dated, supplied in a capsule.

What the annual design change means in practice

A series that changes its reverse every year behaves differently from one that does not. A mixed-year lot of Somali Elephants is a mixed-design lot, where a mixed-year lot of Krugerrands or Maple Leafs is not. Individual years can trade at a premium to metal on the secondary market, and that premium is a collector judgement rather than a bullion one — it can go either way.

Tax position

VAT: silver is not investment gold. The exemption in Article 344 of Directive 2006/112/EC, and in the United Kingdom under VAT Notice 701/21, covers gold only. Silver coins are sold at the standard rate — 23 per cent in Poland, 20 per cent in the United Kingdom.

Who strikes the Somali Elephant?

Dealers name the Bavarian State Mint. That mint makes no mention of the series on its own website, and the Central Bank of Somalia publishes nothing either, so we do not state it as a confirmed fact.

Does the design change every year?

Yes — a different elephant each year is the defining feature of the series, and it is why the year on the coin also identifies the design.

Is it exempt from UK capital gains tax?

No. The exemption follows sterling currency, and this coin is not sterling.
