Pistrucci's St George
The reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon — a design first cut for the Sovereign in 1817 and still in use. Few coin designs anywhere have run that long without alteration.
The obverse carries the official coinage portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings.
The tax point that matters
The Sovereign meets HMRC's tests for an investment gold coin in VAT Notice 701/21A — minted after 1800, at least 900 thousandths fine, legal tender in its country of origin, sold at close to the value of its gold — so it is exempt from VAT.
It is also UK legal tender, and HMRC's capital gains exemption follows sterling currency. For UK residents that places the Sovereign alongside the Britannia and outside capital gains tax, unlike a Krugerrand, Maple Leaf, Eagle or Philharmonic. This is the published rule, not tax advice — your own position depends on your circumstances.
