No thickness is quoted for this coin. The figures circulating on dealer sites disagree with each other and do not reconcile with the published weight and diameter, so we leave the field out rather than print one.
The obverse carries the coat of arms of the Republic of Armenia — the quartered shield with its eagle and lion supporters — with the denomination, the year, the weight and the fineness, and REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA around the rim.
The reverse shows Noah’s Ark on the floodwaters, Mount Ararat and the rising sun behind it, and a dove carrying an olive branch in the foreground. Unlike an annually changing series, this motif stays the same from year to year.
The coin is issued by the Republic of Armenia and struck in Germany by Leipziger Edelmetallverarbeitung, the minting arm of Geiger Edelmetalle. Each piece is supplied in a sealed capsule with a numbered certificate.
Most bullion coins are struck to demand. This one carries a stated mintage of 25,000 pieces a year per size. Whether that supports a premium over the gold price is a question for the market, not something we will assert.
HMRC treats a coin minted after 1800 as bullion gold if it is at least 900 thousandths fine, is or has been legal tender in its country of origin, and normally sells at no more than 180 per cent of the open market value of its gold (VAT Notice 701/21A). The Noah’s Ark coin is 999.9 fine, Armenian legal tender and sold on the gold price, so it meets all three tests.
Capital gains tax is a separate matter. The UK exemption follows sterling legal tender, so it covers Sovereigns and Britannias but not an Armenian coin. This is a statement of the published rule, not tax advice — your own position depends on your circumstances.
How many were struck? The stated mintage for this size is 25,000 coins.
Does the design change each year? No. Only the date changes; the ark motif is constant.
Where is it struck? In Germany, by Leipziger Edelmetallverarbeitung, for the Republic of Armenia.
How much gold is in it? Half a troy ounce, 15.55 g, at 999.9 fineness.
