Australian Kangaroo — Perth Mint Heritage

The series debuted in 1986 as the Australian Gold Nugget — the reverse initially depicted famous Australian gold nuggets from the 19th-century gold rush. In 1989, the Perth Mint changed the motif to the kangaroo — Australia's national animal, featured on the national coat of arms. Since then, the coin has been known as the Australian Kangaroo. The Perth Mint is the state mint of Western Australia, founded in 1899, with LBMA (London Bullion Market Association) accreditation.

The defining feature of the Kangaroo is its annually changing reverse design — each vintage presents a different kangaroo composition. This distinguishes it from all other major bullion series (Krugerrand, Britannia, Maple Leaf and Philharmonic all have fixed designs). The obverse bears the portrait of the reigning Commonwealth monarch (King Charles III since 2024).

999.9 Fineness and Perth Mint Security Features

The Australian Kangaroo has been struck in 999.9 fine gold (four nines, 24 carat) since its first issue in 1986. Since 2018, the Perth Mint applies a micro-engraved security mark on the reverse, and since 2019 — a holographic feature in the form of a letter that changes depending on viewing angle.

VAT Exemption in the European Union

Australian Kangaroo gold coins qualify as investment gold under EU Directive 2006/112/EC, making them exempt from VAT throughout the European Union.

Kangaroo vs Other Bullion Coins

The Australian Kangaroo stands out with its annually changing reverse — a feature not offered by the Krugerrand (fixed springbok since 1967), Maple Leaf (fixed maple leaf) or Philharmonic (fixed organ). In terms of fineness (999.9), it is comparable to the Britannia, Maple Leaf and Philharmonic. The Krugerrand and American Eagle have lower fineness (916.7) but are harder due to their copper content.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the gold fineness of the Australian Kangaroo?

All Australian Kangaroo coins — since 1986 — are struck in 999.9 fine gold (four nines, 24 carat). Pure gold with no alloy components.

Why does the Kangaroo design change every year?

The annual design change is a deliberate Perth Mint strategy — each vintage presents a different kangaroo scene. This combines the function of a bullion coin (pure gold, low premium) with a collectible element (unique design each year).

Is the Australian Kangaroo exempt from VAT?

Yes. Australian Kangaroo gold coins qualify as investment gold under EU Directive 2006/112/EC and are exempt from VAT.

What denominations are available?

The Perth Mint issues the Kangaroo in four standard denominations: 1 oz (AU$100), 1/2 oz (AU$50), 1/4 oz (AU$25) and 1/10 oz (AU$15). A 1 kg version (AU$3,000) is also available.

How does the Kangaroo differ from the Maple Leaf?

Both coins share 999.9 fineness and the same fine gold content. The Maple Leaf has a fixed reverse design and Bullion DNA technology, while the Kangaroo features an annually changing reverse and holographic security features (since 2019).
