Rand Refinery — South African gold bars and Krugerrand coins
Number of products: 14Rand Refinery — a century of African gold
Rand Refinery was established in 1920 in Germiston near Johannesburg to refine gold from the mines of the Witwatersrand — the richest gold deposit in history. For decades it was the largest gold refinery in the world on a single site, and a significant share of all the gold ever mined by man has passed through its furnaces. The refinery holds LBMA Good Delivery accreditation and remains a key link in the global metals market.
Rand Refinery's best known "product" is the gold of the Krugerrand: since 1967 the refinery has supplied the metal and semi-finished blanks for striking the world's first modern bullion coin, produced in cooperation with the South African Mint.
The African Elephant — the Rand Refinery bar series
The refinery's own retail line is the African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) series — bars in gold at 999.9 fineness with a relief of the African elephant, available in 10 g, 20 g, 50 g, 100 g and 1 oz. The bars combine LBMA Good Delivery status with recognisable African design — one of the few design series among bars, alongside the PAMP Fortuna and the Royal Mint Britannia.
What sets Rand Refinery products apart
- a hundred years of history and the position of one of the largest refineries in the world,
- LBMA Good Delivery accreditation — full recognition among dealers,
- a direct link with the Krugerrand, the best known bullion coin,
- a design bar series in weights from 10 g to 100 g and 1 oz.
