The Royal Mint does not publish a thickness for this coin, and its bullion and proof versions are quoted at slightly different diameters by different sellers, so only the mint figure is given above.

What the reverse shows

The Queen’s Panther as it stands on the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace: the heraldic beast of Jane Seymour, shown incensed, with flames issuing from its mouth and ears, holding the impaled arms of Henry VIII bearing the Coat of Augmentation granted to her.

The field carries a Tudor-period background and the Royal Mint’s surface animation security feature.

Where it sits in the series

The Royal Tudor Beasts follow the ten stone beasts on the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court. The Queen’s Panther is the seventh release, after the Seymour Panther, the Lion of England, the Yale of Beaufort, the Bull of Clarence, the Seymour Unicorn and the Tudor Dragon.

VAT and UK capital gains tax

HMRC treats a coin minted after 1800 as bullion gold if it is at least 900 thousandths fine, is or has been legal tender in its country of origin, and normally sells at no more than 180 per cent of the open market value of its gold (VAT Notice 701/21A). The Queen’s Panther is 999.9 fine, UK legal tender and sold close to the gold price, so it meets all three tests.

It is also a United Kingdom coin with a face value in pounds, so it is sterling legal tender. The UK exemption from capital gains tax follows sterling legal tender, which is why Britannias and Sovereigns sit outside that tax while a Krugerrand, Maple Leaf or Philharmonic does not. Questions buyers ask

Whose heraldic beast is it? Jane Seymour’s. The Royal Mint attributes the Queen’s Panther to her, not to Anne Boleyn as some guides state.

Who designed it? David Lawrence designed the reverse; the obverse is Martin Jennings’ coinage portrait of King Charles III.

Is it exempt from UK capital gains tax? For UK residents, yes. It is sterling legal tender, which is what the exemption follows.

Is it a bullion coin or a collector coin? It is sold as bullion, but a themed series usually trades above a plain bullion coin of the same weight. What that premium is worth is for you to judge.
