250 g silver bars

Number of products: 3

A quarter kilo of silver is 23.83 cm³ of metal — about 1.84 times the volume the same mass of gold would take.

Three products here, and one of them is not an ordinary bar: alongside Argor-Heraeus and Nadir Metal Rafineri there is a 250 g coin-bar issued for Niue by StoneX. Live quotes on the silver price page.

What a coin-bar actually is

A coin-bar is shaped and packaged like a bar but issued under the authority of a state — here Niue — with a face value struck on it. That makes it legal tender in the issuing country while still being sold and priced as bullion.

The distinction is not cosmetic. In several jurisdictions the tax treatment of a legal-tender coin differs from that of a plain bar, which is the whole reason the format exists. In the United Kingdom it makes no difference to VAT — silver is standard-rated either way. It can matter for capital gains, but only where the coin is sterling legal tender; a Niue-denominated piece is not, so HMRC treats it as a chargeable asset in the same way as a bar. Anyone buying for a specific tax outcome should take their own advice rather than rely on the format.

StoneX Bullion is a distributor and issuer of these pieces, not an LBMA-accredited refinery. The two bars from Argor-Heraeus and Nadir are made by refineries that are on the LBMA silver Good Delivery list.

Why silver bars are 999 and not 999.9

The London Good Delivery standard for silver sets a minimum of 999.0. That is why 999 is the wholesale norm across silver, where gold buyers are used to 999.9 as a baseline. Some lines run at 999.9 — the difference is one part in a thousand and does not change how the metal is priced.

Neither Argor-Heraeus nor Nadir publishes dimensions for silver at this weight, so none are quoted here.

Where 250 g sits on the premium curve

Manufacturing cost per bar is largely fixed, so premium as a percentage falls as weight rises. Two hundred and fifty grams is past the steep part of that curve — noticeably better than 100 g, not far off 500 g — while still being small enough to sell as a single unit without releasing half a kilo at once.

A retail bar is not a Good Delivery bar

The London Good Delivery silver bar weighs around 1,000 troy ounces — roughly 32 kg. The LBMA states that kilobars and smaller are not acceptable in the London wholesale market. Accreditation belongs to the refinery that made the bar, not to the bar itself, and the correct term is accreditation rather than certificate.

VAT on silver in the United Kingdom

The UK exemption for bullion covers gold bullion only, defined in VAT Notice 701/21 as gold of a purity of not less than 995 thousandths in bar or wafer form, or a qualifying gold coin. Silver is standard-rated — 20 per cent in the United Kingdom, 23 per cent in Poland — whether it takes the form of a bar, a coin-bar or a coin. Statement of the published rule, not tax advice.

Questions buyers ask about this weight

Is a coin-bar better than a bar for tax?

Not in the United Kingdom. VAT applies to silver either way, and the capital gains exemption follows sterling legal tender — a Niue-denominated coin-bar is not sterling, so HMRC treats it as a chargeable asset.

How big is a 250 g silver bar?

Neither refinery publishes dimensions for silver. The volume is fixed at 23.83 cm³, about 1.84 times what the same mass of gold occupies.

Which producers here are LBMA-accredited?

Argor-Heraeus, accredited in Mendrisio on 24 June 1992, and Nadir Metal Rafineri, accredited in Istanbul on 20 June 2012. StoneX is a distributor and issuer rather than an accredited refinery.

Does silver carry VAT?

Yes, at the standard rate — 20 per cent in the UK, 23 per cent in Poland. Only gold bullion is exempt.

Do you buy 250 g silver bars back?

Yes, quoted against the current silver price. See the buyback page.
