10 g silver bars
Number of products: 2Ten grams of silver is 0.95 cm³ — under a cubic centimetre. At that size the packaging is a meaningful part of what you are handling, and a meaningful part of what you pay.
Two products: a single 10 g bar from Argor-Heraeus and a Valcambi CombiBar of 10 × 10 g, which is 100 g scored into ten separable pieces. Live quotes on the silver price page.
One bar, or ten in a sheet
The two products at this weight answer different questions.
The Argor-Heraeus 10 g bar is a single piece: the cheapest way to own exactly ten grams. The Valcambi 10 × 10 g CombiBar is a 100 g sheet scored so that individual ten-gram pieces separate. You buy it when you want a hundred grams now with the option of releasing ten at a time later.
Per gram, the CombiBar costs more. The scoring, the blister and the serial-numbered assay card are extra manufacturing, and they are priced in. If you never intend to break it, that premium buys nothing.
Why small silver bars carry the widest premiums
Rolling a strip, pressing the bar, stamping it and sealing it cost about the same whether the piece holds ten grams or a kilogram. Silver is a cheap metal by weight, so at 10 g that fixed manufacturing cost is a large share of the total price — much larger than the same cost would be on a gold bar of identical size.
This is arithmetic rather than a dealer decision, and it is the single most useful thing to understand before buying small silver. If the objective is metal per pound spent, larger bars do it better. If the objective is small, easily traded units, that is what you are paying the premium for.
Fineness and who makes these
| Product | Producer | Fineness | LBMA silver accreditation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 g bar | Argor-Heraeus | 999 | Mendrisio, 24 June 1992 |
| CombiBar 10 × 10 g | Valcambi | 999.90 or 999.0 depending on line | Balerna, pre-1972 |
The London Good Delivery standard for silver sets a minimum of 999.0, which is why 999 is the norm in silver where gold buyers expect 999.9. Neither producer publishes dimensions for its silver bars, so none are quoted here.
Accreditation belongs to the refinery, not to the bar. Both Argor-Heraeus and Valcambi are on the LBMA silver Good Delivery list; a 10 g retail bar is nothing like the roughly 32 kg plate the London market actually trades.
VAT on silver in the United Kingdom
The UK exemption for bullion covers gold bullion only — gold of a purity of not less than 995 thousandths in bar or wafer form, or a qualifying gold coin, per VAT Notice 701/21. Silver is standard-rated at 20 per cent in the United Kingdom and 23 per cent in Poland.
On a small silver bar this compounds with the manufacturing premium, and it is why the gap between the spot price and the shelf price is at its widest here. Statement of the published rule, not tax advice.
Questions buyers ask about this weight
Why is a 10 g silver bar so much more than ten grams of silver?
Because manufacturing cost per bar barely changes with size, and silver is inexpensive by weight. On ten grams that fixed cost is a large share of the price. Add standard-rate VAT and the gap to spot is at its widest at small sizes.
Is the CombiBar worth the extra?
Only if you expect to separate pieces. It is a 100 g sheet scored into ten 10 g units; the scoring and packaging carry a premium over a plain bar of the same total weight.
What fineness should I expect?
999. The London standard for silver requires only 999.0, so it is the norm; Valcambi runs 999.90 on some lines.
Does silver carry VAT?
Yes, at the standard rate — 20 per cent in the UK, 23 per cent in Poland. Only gold bullion is exempt.
Do you buy 10 g silver bars back?
Yes, quoted against the current silver price. See the buyback page.
