20 g silver bars
Number of products: 1Twenty grams of silver is 1.91 cm³. It is an uncommon weight in silver — most ranges jump from ten grams to fifty, or to the troy ounce at 31.1035 g.
One product here: a 999 bar from Nadir Metal Rafineri, on the LBMA silver Good Delivery list since 20 June 2012. Live quotes on the silver price page.
Why twenty grams is rare in silver
In gold, 20 g is a standard step: Argor-Heraeus, Valcambi, PAMP, Umicore, C.Hafner, the Perth Mint, the Royal Mint and Rand Refinery all make one. In silver the same weight is unusual, and the reason is what a bar is worth rather than what it costs to make.
A 20 g gold bar holds enough value to justify its own tooling, packaging and stock line. Twenty grams of silver does not. Producers concentrate on the sizes the market actually asks for — the troy ounce, 100 g, 250 g, 500 g, 1 kg — and the odd metric steps in between get made by fewer refineries.
The practical effect is that at this weight there is one bar rather than a shelf of alternatives, and the premium sits closer to what a 10 g bar costs per gram than to a 50 g one.
Twenty grams against the ounce
The nearest widely made size is the troy ounce at 31.1035 g. If you are comparing prices, do it per gram: a 20 g bar holds 0.643 troy ounces, so a like-for-like comparison with an ounce bar means dividing by weight rather than looking at the ticket price.
That comparison usually favours the ounce, because it is the format producers make in volume and the one silver quotes are expressed in. Twenty grams makes sense when a round metric number matters to you more than the marginal saving.
Producer and fineness
| Producer | Fineness | LBMA silver accreditation | Dimensions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nadir Metal Rafineri | 999 | Bahçelievler, Istanbul — 20 June 2012 | not published at this weight |
The London Good Delivery standard for silver sets a minimum of 999.0, which is why 999 is the norm across silver where gold buyers expect 999.9. Accreditation belongs to the refinery, not to the bar: the London market's own silver bar weighs around 32 kg.
VAT on silver in the United Kingdom
The UK exemption for bullion covers gold bullion only, defined in VAT Notice 701/21 as gold of a purity of not less than 995 thousandths in bar or wafer form, or a qualifying gold coin. Silver is standard-rated — 20 per cent in the United Kingdom, 23 per cent in Poland. Statement of the published rule, not tax advice.
Questions buyers ask about this weight
Why do so few refineries make a 20 g silver bar?
Because twenty grams of silver does not hold enough value to justify a separate tooling and stock line for most producers. The same weight is standard in gold, where the metal value is far higher.
How does 20 g compare with a one-ounce bar?
A troy ounce is 31.1035 g, so 20 g is 0.643 ounces. Compare per gram rather than per bar; the ounce is usually better supplied and better priced.
How big is a 20 g silver bar?
Nadir does not publish dimensions at this weight. The volume is fixed at 1.91 cm³.
Does silver carry VAT?
Yes, at the standard rate — 20 per cent in the UK, 23 per cent in Poland. Only gold bullion is exempt.
Do you buy 20 g silver bars back?
Yes, quoted against the current silver price. See the buyback page.
