100 g silver bars

Number of products: 4

One hundred grams of silver occupies 9.53 cm³. The same mass of gold takes 5.18 cm³. That is the whole reason silver bars look and feel bigger than the number suggests.

Four products at this weight, and three of them are divisible: a Valcambi CombiBar of 100 × 1 g, a Valcambi CombiCoin of 10 × 10 g, a minted Nadir Metal Rafineri bar and an Argor-Heraeus bar. Live quotes on the silver price page.

What is in stock at 100 g

Product Producer Form Divisible
100 g silver bar Argor-Heraeus minted, single piece no
100 g silver bar Nadir Metal Rafineri minted, single piece no
CombiBar 100 × 1 g Valcambi scored into 100 one-gram pieces yes, to 1 g
CombiCoin 10 × 10 g Valcambi round, scored into 10 ten-gram pieces yes, to 10 g

None of the three producers publishes dimensions for its silver bars. Valcambi lists weights and fineness only; Argor-Heraeus does not publish silver dimensions either. Figures for these bars circulate on dealer sites, but they do not come from the refineries, so they are not quoted here.

Divisibility is the real decision at this weight

At 1 g or 5 g there is nothing to divide. At 1 kg divisibility is impossible. One hundred grams is where the choice actually arises, and it is a trade-off with a price attached.

A plain 100 g bar is the cheapest way to hold that quantity. A CombiBar costs more per gram because the scoring, the blister and the serial-numbered assay card are extra manufacturing — and in return you can sell 5 g without breaking up the position. The CombiCoin sits between the two: ten pieces of 10 g rather than a hundred of 1 g, so less scoring and a lower premium than the CombiBar, with coarser divisibility.

Which is right depends on whether you expect to sell in parts. If you do not, the extra premium buys nothing.

Why silver bars are 999 and not 999.9

In gold, 999.9 is the retail norm. In silver it is the other way round. The London Good Delivery standard for silver sets a minimum of 999.0, so 999 is what the wholesale market runs on and what most refineries produce. Valcambi offers 999.90 or 999.0 depending on the line; Nadir Metal Rafineri and Argor-Heraeus work at 999. The difference is roughly one part in a thousand.

A retail bar is not a Good Delivery bar

The London Good Delivery silver bar weighs around 1,000 troy ounces — roughly 32 kg — at a minimum fineness of 999.0. The LBMA states plainly that kilobars, 100-ounce bars and anything smaller are not acceptable in the London wholesale market. A 100 g bar is a long way below that line.

The accreditation belongs to the refinery, not to the bar. On the LBMA silver Good Delivery list: Valcambi SA (Balerna, pre-1972), Argor-Heraeus SA (Mendrisio, accredited 24 June 1992) and Nadir Metal Rafineri (Istanbul, accredited 20 June 2012). The correct word is accreditation, not certificate.

VAT on silver in the United Kingdom

The UK VAT exemption for bullion covers gold and nothing else. HMRC defines gold bullion in VAT Notice 701/21 as gold of a purity of not less than 995 thousandths in the form of a bar or wafer, or a qualifying gold coin. Silver is not gold bullion, so silver bullion carries VAT at the standard rate, currently 20 per cent in the United Kingdom and 23 per cent in Poland.

That single difference is why silver costs noticeably more in the UK than the spot price suggests, and why the premium on a silver bar looks wide next to a gold one. It is a statement of the published rule, not tax advice.

Questions buyers ask about this weight

Is a CombiBar worth the extra premium?

Only if you expect to sell in parts. The scoring, blister and serial-numbered assay card are extra manufacturing and are priced in. A plain 100 g bar holds the same metal for less.

How big is a 100 g silver bar?

Neither Valcambi, Argor-Heraeus nor Nadir publishes dimensions for silver, so there is no manufacturer figure to quote. What is fixed is the volume: 100 g of silver is 9.53 cm³, against 5.18 cm³ for the same mass of gold.

What fineness should I expect?

999 in most cases. The London standard for silver requires only 999.0, so 999 is the norm; Valcambi offers 999.90 on some lines.

Does silver carry VAT?

Yes. Only gold bullion is exempt. Silver is standard-rated — 20 per cent in the UK, 23 per cent in Poland.

Do you buy 100 g silver bars back?

Yes, quoted against the current silver price. See the buyback page.
