3 g Chinese Panda 2025 — the design that changes every year

The Chinese Panda is one of the few bullion series in which the reverse is redrawn for every year of issue. The 3 g coin holds 3 grams of 999 fine gold and is issued by the People's Bank of China; the coins are produced by China Gold Coin Incorporation.

Why the weight is in grams, not ounces

Until 2015 the Panda was struck in troy ounces. From 2016 the series moved to metric weights, which is why the sizes run 1 g, 3 g, 8 g, 15 g and 30 g rather than 1/20 oz through 1 oz. A 30 g coin therefore contains slightly less gold than a one-ounce coin (31.1035 g) — worth knowing when you compare prices per gram against a Britannia or a Maple Leaf.

The 2025 design

The obverse carries the Temple of Heaven in Beijing with the name of the People's Republic of China and the year of issue — the one element that stays constant across the series.

The 2025 reverse shows an adult panda eating bamboo with two cubs: one cub reaching towards the adult, the other on a rock behind. It belongs to the ten-year thematic sequence following a panda family from birth to adulthood.

VAT and UK capital gains tax

HMRC treats a coin minted after 1800 as bullion gold if it is at least 900 thousandths fine, is or has been legal tender in its country of origin, and normally sells at no more than 180 per cent of the open market value of its gold (VAT Notice 701/21A). This coin is 999 fine and is Chinese legal tender, so it falls inside the exemption for gold bullion.

Capital gains tax is separate. The UK exemption follows sterling legal tender, which covers Sovereigns and Britannias but not a Chinese coin. This is the published rule, not tax advice — your own position depends on your circumstances.

Questions buyers ask

Does the reverse really change every year? Yes. That annual change is the defining feature of the series and is why dated Pandas are collected as well as held for the metal.

Is a 30 g Panda the same as a one-ounce coin? No. A troy ounce is 31.1035 g, so a 30 g Panda holds about 3.5 per cent less gold.

How is the coin packaged? In a sealed plastic sachet from the mint.

Is it VAT free in the UK? It meets HMRC's tests for a gold bullion coin, so yes for VAT. It is not exempt from capital gains tax.
