The Lunar III Year of the Goat 2027 gold coin contains 3.1103 g of 999.9 fine gold and carries a face value of 15 Australian dollars. What sets this coin apart

  • No announced cap — the Perth Mint states the number struck for this size only after production closes.
  • Reverse valid for 2027 only — the Goat design will not return within the current twelve-year cycle.
  • 999.9 fineness — the highest purity used in bullion coins.
  • Government guarantee of weight and fineness — the Perth Mint is owned by the Government of Western Australia.
  • Recognised on the secondary market — the Lunar series is bought back worldwide.

The Lunar series — twelve years, twelve animals

The Perth Mint launched its first lunar series in 1996. Each series runs for twelve years, covering a full Chinese zodiac cycle, after which the mint starts again with new artwork. The third series began in 2020 with the Year of the Rat, and 2027 falls on the Goat.

The practical consequence: each year's design is struck for one year only and is never reissued. The next Year of the Goat arrives in 2039, by then within the fourth series and with a different reverse.

Obverse

The obverse carries the effigy of King Charles III by Dan Thorne, together with the 15 Australian dollar denomination, the weight and fineness and the year of issue. Australia remains a constitutional monarchy, which is why the reigning monarch appears on all Australian bullion coins.

Reverse

The reverse was designed by Wade Robinson. It shows a goat standing on a mountain plain, with rugged terrain and a solitary tree in the distance. The composition is completed by the Chinese character for Goat, the inscription GOAT 2027 and the P mintmark.

The designer described his approach as a study in balance: resilience, inner strength and wisdom were to read as clearly as the animal's gentle nature. The same design appears on the gold and platinum coins. The silver release carries a different reverse — three goats by Natasha Muhl.

The Perth Mint — who strikes this coin

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as a branch of Britain's Royal Mint, refining gold from the Western Australian goldfields. It is now owned by the Government of Western Australia, which guarantees by statute the weight and fineness of every coin struck — an unusual arrangement, as most mints operate as companies without such a guarantee.

The mint's refinery is listed in the LBMA Good Delivery system, meaning its bars and metal are accepted in wholesale trade without further assay. For a buyer of bullion coins this comes down to one thing: on resale, the origin of the metal does not have to be proven.

What to check before buying

Fractional coins carry a higher premium than the ounce because minting costs spread across less metal. In exchange you get divisibility: on sale you can liquidate exactly as much as you need.

No paper certificate is included — standard for bullion and no reflection on metal value.

Frequently asked questions

How much gold does this coin contain?

Exactly 3.1103 grams of fine gold at 999.9 fineness. The total weight of the coin is effectively the same as its metal content.

What is the mintage of this size?

The Perth Mint set no cap in advance for this size. The official number struck is published only after production closes. Only the one ounce releases carry a cap announced up front: 30,000 in gold and 300,000 in silver.

How does the gold reverse differ from the silver one?

They are two separate designs. Gold and platinum carry Wade Robinson's composition with a single goat on a mountain plain. Silver received Natasha Muhl's design showing three goats among mountains with a blossoming plum tree.

Is VAT charged on this coin?

In Poland gold meeting the conditions for bullion is exempt from VAT under Article 122 of the VAT Act.

When does the Goat design return in the Lunar series?

The Chinese zodiac cycle runs twelve years, so the next Year of the Goat falls in 2039 — by then in the Perth Mint's fourth lunar series and with a new reverse.
