The Lunar III Year of the Goat 2027 silver coin contains 31.1035 g of 999.9 fine silver and carries a face value of 1 Australian dollars. It is the eighth release in the Perth Mint's third lunar series, dedicated to the Goat — the eighth animal of the Chinese zodiac. The ounce is the standard trading unit in bullion — this size has the deepest secondary market in the series.

The Perth Mint launched its first lunar series in 1996. Each series runs for twelve years, covering a full Chinese zodiac cycle, after which the mint starts again with new artwork. The third series began in 2020 with the Year of the Rat, and 2027 falls on the Goat.
The practical consequence: each year's design is struck for one year only and is never reissued. The next Year of the Goat arrives in 2039, by then within the fourth series and with a different reverse.
The obverse carries the effigy of King Charles III by Dan Thorne, together with the 1 Australian dollar denomination, the weight and fineness and the year of issue. Australia remains a constitutional monarchy, which is why the reigning monarch appears on all Australian bullion coins.
The reverse of the 2027 Goat silver coins is by Natasha Muhl. Titled "Three Goats Bring Bliss", it shows three animals — an adult goat, a young goat and a kid — grazing among mountains, with a blossoming plum tree behind them. In Chinese symbolism the plum tree stands for purity, perseverance and hope.
The designer described the trio as an expression of life, vitality and growth, and of the harmony between heaven, earth and humanity. This design applies to silver only — the gold and platinum coins of the same year carry Wade Robinson's work.
The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as a branch of Britain's Royal Mint, refining gold from the Western Australian goldfields. It is now owned by the Government of Western Australia, which guarantees by statute the weight and fineness of every coin struck — an unusual arrangement, as most mints operate as companies without such a guarantee.
The mint's refinery is listed in the LBMA Good Delivery system, meaning its bars and metal are accepted in wholesale trade without further assay. For a buyer of bullion coins this comes down to one thing: on resale, the origin of the metal does not have to be proven.
The coin ships in a factory capsule with no paper certificate — standard for bullion. Leave the capsule closed: fingerprints reduce the resale price.
