1 oz Lunar III Year of the Goat 2027 — Perth Mint gold coin, 30,000 mintage

The Lunar III Year of the Goat 2027 gold coin contains one troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold and carries a face value of 100 Australian dollars. It is the eighth release in the Perth Mint's third lunar series and the only size of this year with a fixed mintage — 30,000 coins. Every other size is struck without a cap until production closes.

The Lunar series — twelve years, twelve animals

The Perth Mint launched its first lunar series in 1996. Each series runs for twelve years, covering a full Chinese zodiac cycle, after which the mint starts again with entirely new artwork. The third series began in 2020 with the Year of the Rat, and 2027 falls on the Goat — the eighth animal of the cycle.

This has a practical consequence: each year's design is struck for one year only and is never reissued in the same form. The next Year of the Goat arrives in 2039, by then within the fourth series and with a different design.

Obverse

The obverse carries the effigy of King Charles III by Dan Thorne, together with the 100 Australian dollar denomination, the weight and fineness, and the year of issue. Australia remains a constitutional monarchy, which is why the reigning monarch appears on all Australian bullion coins.

Reverse

The reverse was designed by Wade Robinson. It shows a goat standing on a mountain plain, with rugged terrain and a solitary tree in the distance. The composition is completed by the Chinese character for Goat, the inscription GOAT 2027 and the Perth Mint's P mintmark.

The designer described his approach as a study in balance: the composition was meant to express the animal's resilience, inner strength and wisdom while also conveying its gentle nature. The same design appears on the gold and platinum bullion coins. The silver release carries a completely different reverse — three goats by Natasha Muhl.

What to check before buying

The coin ships in a factory protective capsule without a paper certificate — standard practice for bullion and no reflection on metal value. Gold at 999.9 fineness is soft, so the capsule is best left sealed: fingerprints and light scratches reduce the price on resale.

Note also that the 30,000 mintage applies to the one ounce version only. If a guaranteed limit matters to you, the smaller sizes of this year do not carry one.
