The 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf coin 2027 contains 31.1035 g of 999.9 fine gold, measures 30.00 mm and carries a face value of 50 Canadian dollars. Why the 1 oz Maple Leaf 2027

  • A full troy ounce in a single coin — 31.1035 g of 999.9 gold with no alloying metals of the kind that raise the total weight of 22 carat coins.
  • The base size of the series — the one ounce coin has been struck since 1979; 1/4 and 1/10 oz followed in November 1982, 1/2 oz in 1986 and 1/20 oz in 1993.
  • Three layers of security on the one ounce coin: radial lines, laser micro-engraving with year digits and — according to the mint — Bullion DNA.
  • An LBMA accredited producer — the Royal Canadian Mint is on the LBMA Good Delivery list for gold.
  • VAT-exempt under Council Directive 2006/112/EC.

From 999 to 999.9 — history of the one ounce coin

The Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Gold Maple Leaf in 1979, at first only as a one ounce coin. The 1979-1982 issues were 999 fine. In November 1982 the mint raised the fineness to 999.9, and according to its own materials this made it the world's first gold bullion coin of 99.99% purity. The standard issue has kept that fineness ever since, including the 2027 coin.

Alongside the change, 1/4 and 1/10 oz coins joined the series, followed by 1/2 oz in 1986 and 1/20 oz in 1993. Since 2005 the mint has also released occasional special issues at 99.999 fineness — separate products that did not replace the standard 999.9 coin.

Later changes concerned security rather than design: in 2013 a laser micro-engraved maple leaf with year digits appeared on the one ounce coin, from the 2014 issue the coin is — according to the mint — covered by the Bullion DNA system, and since 2015 both sides carry radial lines in the background.

Obverse — the portrait of Charles III

The 2027 obverse shows King Charles III in a portrait by Steven Rosati. This effigy has appeared on the series' gold bullion coin since 2024, which makes 2027 the fourth year with it. The 2027 special versions already published by the mint confirm the same designers for both sides.

As on the reverse, the background is filled with fine radial lines — a feature introduced in 2015 that sets current coins apart from the 1979-2014 issues.

Reverse and security features

The reverse carries the maple leaf designed by Walter Ott — the motif that gives the series its name. On the one ounce coin it is accompanied by features that can be checked without touching the surface:

  • Radial lines — fine lines radiating across the background of both sides, used since 2015 and also present on the fractional sizes.
  • Laser micro-engraving — a small maple leaf with year digits, used on the one ounce coin since 2013; the digits change every year, tying the mark to a specific issue.
  • Bullion DNA — according to the mint, the system covers the one ounce gold coin from the 2014 issue onwards.

A loupe is enough to inspect the radial lines and the micro-engraving. Both are checked visually, without handling the coin's fields.

What to check when buying the 2027 coin

  • Status of the issue: as of November 2026 the mint has not yet published a product page for the standard 2027 bullion coin. The data above reflects the series standard; there is no information about changes for 2027.
  • Standard or special version: the 2027 issue also exists in special versions with an additional privy mark. This listing covers the standard bullion coin.
  • Dated year or mixed years: weight, fineness and diameter are identical. The difference is the date on the coin and the price, which depends on the gold price and the market premium.
  • Issues at 99.999 fineness are different products and should not be confused with the standard 999.9 coin.
  • 999.9 gold is soft: scratches and fingerprints stay on the surface permanently. Keep the coin in its pouch or a 30 mm capsule and hold it by the edge.

One ounce gold coins compared

Coin Mint Fineness Face value
Maple Leaf 2027 (this coin) Royal Canadian Mint 999.9 50 CAD
Krugerrand South African Mint 916.7 (22 carat) no face value
Vienna Philharmonic Münze Österreich 999.9 100 EUR
Britannia The Royal Mint 999.9 (since 2013) 100 GBP
American Eagle United States Mint 916.7 (22 carat) 50 USD

The Krugerrand and the American Eagle are 916.7 fine: they contain one troy ounce of fine gold, but their alloy includes other metals, so the total coin weight exceeds an ounce. The Maple Leaf, Philharmonic and Britannia (since 2013) are 999.9 fine, so the gold weight and the coin weight practically match.

Frequently asked questions

How much gold does the 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf 2027 contain?

The coin contains 31.1035 g of fine gold, one troy ounce, at 999.9 fineness. It measures 30.00 mm in diameter and carries a face value of 50 Canadian dollars.

Is the 2027 coin different from the 2026 coin?

As of November 2026 the mint has not announced any design or specification changes for 2027. Weight, fineness, diameter and face value follow the series standard — what changes is the date and the year digits in the micro-engraving.

Who designed the coin?

The maple leaf on the reverse was designed by Walter Ott. The portrait of King Charles III on the obverse is by Steven Rosati and has appeared on the series' gold bullion coin since 2024.

How does the Maple Leaf differ from the Krugerrand?

The Maple Leaf is 999.9 fine and has a face value of 50 Canadian dollars. The Krugerrand from the South African Mint is 916.7 fine (22 carat) and has no face value. Both coins contain one troy ounce of fine gold.

When does one ounce make more sense than smaller sizes?

One 1 oz coin holds as much gold as ten 1/10 oz coins, so it is simpler to store and keep track of. Smaller sizes from 1/2 to 1/20 oz allow buying in smaller amounts and selling gold in parts.

Is VAT charged on this coin?

No. Gold coins of 999.9 fineness are exempt from VAT under Council Directive 2006/112/EC, Articles 344-356, implemented in Poland by Article 122 of the Polish VAT Act.

How can the security features be checked on arrival?

Under a loupe you can see the radial lines in the background of both sides and the laser micro-engraved maple leaf with the year digits. According to the mint, the one ounce coin is also covered by the Bullion DNA system.
