1 oz Silver Maple Leaf 2027 — 31.1035 g of 999.9 silver with a MINTSHIELD surface

The 1 oz Maple Leaf Silver Coin 2027 is the 2027 issue of a series the Royal Canadian Mint has struck since 1988: one troy ounce of 999.9 fine silver, 38 mm across, with a face value of 5 Canadian dollars. It holds the same weight of metal as the series' gold ounce at a fraction of the price per piece, which lets buyers hold silver in uniform units that are easy to count. The mint has announced no changes to the design or specifications for 2027 (as of November 2026), so the coin follows the series standard.

Why this coin

  • 999.9 fineness — higher than the 999 of the silver Philharmonic, Britannia and American Eagle (see comparison below).
  • A maple leaf design unchanged since 1988, so the coin is recognisable whatever the year.
  • Two security features added in 2014: radial lines and a laser micro-engraved mark.
  • The MINTSHIELD process, used since 2018, reduces white spotting on the silver.
  • A full mint tube of 25 coins equals exactly 25 ounces — about 777.6 g of silver in one easy-to-count unit.

Series history — from the 1979 gold ounce to the 2027 silver issue

The Royal Canadian Mint launched the Gold Maple Leaf in 1979 and added the one-ounce silver coin in 1988. Since then the silver coin has carried the same maple leaf on its reverse, while the year and — with each monarch — the obverse portrait have changed.

Two technical upgrades define the modern standard. In 2014 the mint added radial lines and a laser micro-engraved mark, and since 2018 every Silver Maple Leaf has been produced with the MINTSHIELD process.

The 2027 issue continues that standard. As of November 2026 the Royal Canadian Mint had published no changes to design, weight, fineness or diameter for 2027 — buyers receive the series specifications with the date 2027.

Obverse — King Charles III by Steven Rosati

The 2027 obverse carries a portrait of King Charles III designed by Steven Rosati. The same Rosati portrait reached the gold Maple Leaf in 2024, so the silver and gold coins of the series now share one effigy.

Earlier years struck before the portrait change have a different obverse with identical metal content. That does not affect the silver content, but it matters to anyone building a run of dates.

Reverse and security — maple leaf, radial lines, MINTSHIELD

The reverse shows the maple leaf — a design unchanged in the silver series since 1988. Since 2014 fine radial lines cover the background, and the coin carries a laser micro-engraved mark visible under a loupe. Both make counterfeiting harder and allow a quick visual check.

Since 2018 Silver Maple Leafs have been made with the MINTSHIELD process, which according to the mint reduces white spots, often called milk spots. It lowers the risk rather than removing it — silver still reacts to moisture and handling.

What to check when buying the 2027 issue

  • 2027 or 2026 — both years follow the series specifications, and no changes were announced for 2027. The date is the difference, so the choice is a collecting preference, not a question of silver content.
  • VAT — unlike gold bullion, silver does not qualify for a VAT exemption, so the standard rate applies. The gross price includes VAT and a market premium over the silver spot price.
  • Storage space — at 38 mm the silver ounce is larger than the series' gold ounce (30 mm). A full mint tube holds 25 coins, about 777.6 g of silver.
  • White spots — MINTSHIELD reduces the risk but does not rule it out. Hold coins by the rim, use gloves and keep them dry.
  • Verification — 31.1035 g, 38 mm, radial lines and the laser mark. A coin dated 2027 missing any of these should be checked more closely.

FAQ — 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf 2027

How does the 2027 Silver Maple Leaf differ from the 2026 coin?

Design and specifications follow the series standard: 31.1035 g of 999.9 silver, 38 mm, 5 CAD. The Royal Canadian Mint has announced no changes for 2027 (as of November 2026), so the date is the difference.

The coin contains 31.1035 g of 999.9 fine silver, one troy ounce. Its face value is 5 Canadian dollars and its diameter 38 mm.

No. Silver is charged at the standard VAT rate. The VAT exemption applies to gold bullion, not to silver coins.

What does the MINTSHIELD process do?

Since 2018 the Royal Canadian Mint has produced Silver Maple Leafs with MINTSHIELD, which reduces white spots on the surface. It does not rule them out entirely, so keep the coin dry and handle it by the rim.

Both contain 31.1035 g of 999.9 fine metal. The silver ounce is 38 mm, 5 CAD and charged at the standard VAT rate; the gold ounce is 30 mm, 50 CAD and VAT exempt under EU rules for gold bullion.
