Austrian 20 Corona 1915 — Austrian Mint restrike
The 20 corona is a gold coin of Austria-Hungary with the portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The Austrian Mint strikes it today as a historical restrike dated 1915: 6.78 g total weight, 6.10 g of fine gold at 900/1000 and 21 mm in diameter.
In gold content the 20 corona sits between the 4 florins and the 8 florins — it holds a little more gold than the 20 francs of the Latin Monetary Union. The largest coin of the series is the 100 corona with 30.49 g of gold.
The corona replaces the florin
The corona was introduced in Austria-Hungary by the currency reform of 1892. It replaced the florin (gulden) and was issued in gold as 10 and 20 corona pieces. Coronas were officially struck until 1915, and today's restrikes carry that date.
The date 1915 therefore says nothing about the age of the coin. The Austrian Mint produces the 20 corona as a historical reproduction at full fineness and to the original specifications.
Obverse and reverse
Obverse: portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I with a Latin legend listing his titles.
Reverse: the crowned double-headed eagle, the value 20 CORONA and the date 1915.
Price and the gold price
The price is the value of 6.10 g of fine gold at the current gold price plus a market premium for minting and distribution. A fineness of 900/1000 means a gold-copper alloy — harder than 999.9 gold, but valued in the same way by its fine gold content.
VAT
The 20 corona coin meets the EU criteria for VAT-exempt gold coins: fineness of at least 900/1000, struck after 1800, legal tender in the country of origin (the corona was the currency of Austria-Hungary) and sold at no more than 80% above the value of its gold. The legal basis is Article 344 of Directive 2006/112/EC.
