Austrian 4 Florins / 10 Francs 1892 — Austrian Mint restrike

The 4 florins / 10 francs is one of the smallest Austrian gold coins: 2.90 g of fine gold at 900/1000, 3.23 g total weight and 19 mm in diameter. It is a historical restrike by the Austrian Mint dated 1892.

The double value is no accident — the coin had the same specifications as the 10 francs of the Latin Monetary Union states. Its larger counterpart is the 8 florins / 20 francs.

Austria and the Latin Monetary Union

In 1865 France, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland formed the Latin Monetary Union with a common gold coin standard. Austria did not join, but it struck 4 and 8 florin coins to the specifications of the 10 and 20 franc pieces, which made them easier to use in international trade.

Coins with the portrait of Franz Joseph I were struck until 1892; that year the currency reform replaced the florin with the corona. Today's restrikes carry the date 1892.

Obverse and reverse

Obverse: portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I with a Latin legend of his titles.

Reverse: the crowned double-headed eagle with the double value — 4 florins and 10 francs — and the date 1892.

Price and the gold price

The price is the value of 2.90 g of gold at the current gold price plus a market premium. For such a small coin the market premium per gram is usually higher than for larger coins, but the amount per purchase is low.

VAT

The 4 florin coin meets the EU criteria for VAT-exempt gold coins: fineness of at least 900/1000, struck after 1800, legal tender in the country of origin (the florin was Austria's currency until the 1892 reform) and sold at no more than 80% above the value of its gold. The legal basis is Article 344 of Directive 2006/112/EC.
