Austrian 8 Florins / 20 Francs 1892 — Austrian Mint restrike
The 8 florins / 20 francs is an Austrian gold coin with the specifications of the French 20 francs: 6.45 g total weight, 5.81 g of fine gold at 900/1000 and 21 mm in diameter. The Austrian Mint strikes it as a historical restrike dated 1892.
The 20 franc coins of the Latin Monetary Union — French, Belgian, Swiss or Italian — share the same standard, so the 8 florins compares directly with them in historical gold coins. The smaller version is the 4 florins / 10 francs.
One coin for two systems
The Latin Monetary Union was formed in 1865 by France, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland. Austria was not a member, but it struck 8 and 4 florin coins with the weight and fineness of the 20 and 10 franc pieces. With its double value, the coin was understood both in Austria and in the union countries.
Coins with the portrait of Franz Joseph I were struck until 1892, when the currency reform replaced the florin with the corona. Today's restrikes carry that date.
Obverse and reverse
Obverse: portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I with a Latin legend of his titles.
Reverse: the crowned double-headed eagle, the double value 8 florins and 20 francs, and the date 1892.
Price and the gold price
The price is set by the value of 5.81 g of fine gold at the current gold price and a market premium. The gold value equals that of the Latin Monetary Union 20 francs, so when comparing offers it is mainly the market premium and condition that differ.
VAT
The 8 florin coin meets the EU criteria for VAT-exempt gold coins: fineness of at least 900/1000, struck after 1800, legal tender in the country of origin (the florin was Austria's currency until the 1892 reform) and sold at no more than 80% above the value of its gold. The legal basis is Article 344 of Directive 2006/112/EC.
