The Perth Mint
A design that changes every year
The series began in 1986 as the Australian Nugget, showing famous Australian gold nuggets on the reverse. From 1989 the kangaroo took over, and the Perth Mint has changed the reverse design every year since. That is unusual among bullion coins: a Krugerrand or a Maple Leaf looks the same whatever the date.
Half ounce against one ounce
The half ounce holds the same metal as two quarter ounce coins and costs less per gram than either. Against a one ounce coin it is the more expensive way to buy gold per gram, and the easier one to sell in parts.
VAT and UK capital gains tax
HMRC treats a coin minted after 1800 as investment gold if it is at least 900 thousandths fine, is or has been legal tender in its country of origin, and normally sells at no more than 180 per cent of the open market value of its gold (VAT Notice 701/21A). The Kangaroo is 99.99 fine, Australian legal tender and sold on the gold price, so it meets all three tests.
Capital gains tax is a separate matter. The UK exemption follows sterling legal tender, so it covers Sovereigns and Britannias but not an Australian coin. This is a statement of the published rule, not tax advice — your own position depends on your circumstances.
Questions buyers ask
Why are the figures given as maxima? Because that is how the Perth Mint publishes them. The mint states a minimum gross weight and maximum dimensions rather than single exact values.
Which year will I receive? Mixed-year stock ships as available.
Is it the same gold as a Britannia or a Maple Leaf? Effectively yes at this fineness. The differences are the issuing country, the face value and the tax treatment that follows from it.
Does it come in a capsule? Yes. Every coin is dispatched in a protective capsule.
