1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf 2027 — half an ounce of fine gold from the Royal Canadian Mint
The 1/2 oz Maple Leaf Gold Coin 2027 holds 15.5518 g of 999.9 fine gold in a 25 mm coin with a face value of 20 CAD. The Royal Canadian Mint added this size to the series in 1986 — seven years after the one-ounce coin and four years after the 1/4 and 1/10 oz fractions.
The half ounce sits in the middle of the gold Maple Leaf family: noticeably more metal than the small fractions, at half the purchase amount of a full ounce. The 2027 issue keeps the standard design and specifications of the series — the mint has announced no changes for it (as of November 2026).

Why the 1/2 oz Maple Leaf
- 15.5518 g of 999.9 gold — exactly half the content of the one-ounce coin
- Two 1/2 oz coins add up to one ounce that can later be sold in two parts
- 25 mm diameter and 20 CAD face value — fixed parameters for this size
- Radial lines on obverse and reverse, used across the series since 2015, fractions included
- Manufacturer listed in the LBMA Good Delivery system for gold
How the gold Maple Leaf family grew — and where the half ounce fits
The series started in 1979 with a single coin: one ounce of 999 gold. In November 1982 the Royal Canadian Mint raised the fineness to 999.9 and introduced the 1/4 and 1/10 oz fractions at the same time. According to the mint, it was then the world's first gold bullion coin at 99.99% purity.
The 1/2 oz arrived in 1986, filling the gap between the quarter ounce (7.7759 g) and the full ounce (31.1035 g). The smallest size, 1/20 oz, followed in 1993. Since 2005 the mint has occasionally released special 99.999 issues; they did not replace the standard — the 2027 half ounce is 999.9 fine.
In 2015 fine radial lines were added to the background of both sides, and since 2024 the obverse of gold bullion coins has carried King Charles III. The 2027 issue continues this layout with no changes announced by the mint.
Obverse — King Charles III by Steven Rosati
The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III designed by Steven Rosati. On gold Maple Leaf bullion coins it replaced the portrait of Elizabeth II in 2024, which makes 2027 the fourth year with the King on the obverse.
The 20 CAD face value gives the coin legal tender status in Canada. It does not set the price, which follows the gold price and the fine gold content. Like the reverse, the obverse background has carried radial lines since 2015.
Reverse — Walter Ott's maple leaf and radial lines
The reverse shows a single maple leaf — the symbol of Canada — designed by Walter Ott. The motif is unchanged for 2027; on a 25 mm coin the leaf is smaller than on the one-ounce coin (30 mm), but drawn the same way.
Since 2015 fine radial lines have filled the background around the leaf. The feature is used across the whole family, fractions included. On the 1/2 oz it is worth tilting the coin under good light: an even, regular line pattern is one element of an authenticity check, alongside the 15.55 g weight and 25 mm diameter.
What to look for when buying
The 2027 issue: the Royal Canadian Mint has not yet published its standard 2027 bullion page and has announced no change to design or specifications (as of November 2026). This description relies on the series parameters — if the mint announces a change, we will update this page.
Two halves instead of one ounce: the gold content is the same, but the cost of striking two coins is spread over less metal, so the premium per gram on a 1/2 oz is usually higher than on a 1 oz coin. Compare offers per gram of fine gold — current quotes are on the gold price page.
999.9 gold is soft. Keep the coin in its sachet or a capsule and hold it by the edge — scratches on the field show up clearly against the light.

FAQ — 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf 2027
How much gold does the 1/2 oz Maple Leaf contain?
The coin contains 15.5518 g of 999.9 fine gold, which is half a troy ounce. It is 25 mm in diameter and has a face value of 20 CAD.
Since when has the Royal Canadian Mint struck the 1/2 oz Maple Leaf?
Since 1986. Before that the series included the one-ounce coin (since 1979) and the 1/4 and 1/10 oz fractions (since November 1982); the 1/20 oz was added in 1993.
Are two 1/2 oz coins the same as one 1 oz coin?
The gold content is practically identical: 2 x 15.5518 g versus 31.1035 g. Two coins can however be sold separately, and because two coins cost more to strike, the price per gram is usually higher than for one ounce.
How does the 2027 issue differ from 2026?
As of November 2026 the mint has announced no change to the design or specifications for 2027. The year on the coin differs; weight, fineness, diameter, face value and motifs follow the series standard.
How can I check that a 1/2 oz Maple Leaf is genuine?
The coin should weigh 15.55 g and measure 25 mm. Since 2015 both sides have fine radial lines in the background, which should form an even, regular pattern when tilted under good light.
Is the 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf VAT-exempt?
Yes. As a gold coin of 999.9 fineness with a 20 CAD face value, it is exempt from VAT in the EU under Directive 2006/112/EC, art. 344-356; in Poland the basis is art. 122 of the VAT Act.
