Gold Maple Leaf 1/20 oz 2027 — the smallest size in the Maple Leaf gold series

The 1/20 oz Gold Maple Leaf 2027 holds 1.5552 g of pure gold at 999.9 fineness on a blank about 14 mm across, with a face value of 1 Canadian dollar. The Royal Canadian Mint added this size in 1993 as the fifth and smallest in the standard series — twenty coins equal one ounce of gold.

At half the weight of the tenth-ounce, it is the lightest way to buy gold from the Canadian mint — for small purchases, as a gift or alongside larger coins. The 2027 issue follows the standard design; as of November 2026 no changes have been announced.

What the 1/20 oz size offers

  • 1.5552 g of 999.9 gold — one twentieth of a troy ounce and half the gold of the 1/10 oz.
  • Lowest weight in the series — Royal Canadian Mint gold in its smallest standard portion, well suited as a gift or a small addition.
  • 1 CAD face value — the lowest in the series; face values do not scale with weight, the value comes from the gold.
  • In the series since 1993 — struck at 999.9 from the start, as the size arrived eleven years after the fineness change.
  • Radial lines on both sides — a security feature since 2015, also used on the fractions.

Five sizes, one series — where the 1/20 oz fits

The Maple Leaf began in 1979 as a 1 oz coin at 999 fineness. In November 1982 the mint moved to 999.9 and introduced the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz; the 1/2 oz followed in 1986 and the 1/20 oz in 1993, completing the family of standard sizes:

Size Fine gold content Face value In the series since
1 oz 31.1035 g 50 CAD 1979
1/2 oz 15.5518 g 20 CAD 1986
1/4 oz 7.7759 g 10 CAD November 1982
1/10 oz 3.1104 g 5 CAD November 1982
1/20 oz 1.5552 g 1 CAD 1993

The table shows that the 1/20 oz has a face value five times lower than the tenth-ounce, while its gold content is only half as large.

Obverse — Charles III in miniature

The obverse of the 2027 issue shows King Charles III in the effigy by Steven Rosati, used on Gold Maple Leaf bullion since the 2024 issue. On a coin about 14 mm across, the portrait and radial lines are very fine — best viewed under a loupe. No change has been announced for 2027.

Reverse and security features

The reverse carries Walter Ott's maple leaf, the same motif as on every size in the series. The radial background lines on both sides, introduced in 2015 as a security feature, also appear on the smallest fraction.

Other features known from the 1 oz coin — such as the laser micro-engraved mark with the year — are not confirmed for the 1/20 oz, so we do not describe them here.

What to check before buying

  • Cost of the smallest fraction — the premium is spread over just 1.5552 g of gold, so the price per gram is usually well above that of a 1/10 oz or 1 oz coin.
  • Weight check — at about 1.56 g you need scales accurate to 0.01 g.
  • Diameter — we state about 14 mm; the mint has not yet published the data sheet for the standard 2027 issue.
  • 2027 issue — standard design and specification, no changes announced as of November 2026.
  • Storage — a coin this small is easy to misplace; keep it in its pouch or in a capsule sized for its diameter.

FAQ — Gold Maple Leaf 1/20 oz 2027

How much gold does the 1/20 oz Maple Leaf contain?

The coin contains 1.5552 g of pure gold at 999.9 fineness, one twentieth of a troy ounce (31.1035 g). That is half the gold content of the 1/10 oz.

Why is the face value only 1 Canadian dollar?

Maple Leaf face values are symbolic and do not scale with weight: the 1/20 oz is 1 CAD, the 1/10 oz 5 CAD and the 1 oz 50 CAD. The price is set by gold content and the ounce price, not by face value.

Since when has the 1/20 oz been part of the Maple Leaf series?

Since 1993. It was the last of the five standard sizes — after the 1 oz (1979), the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz (1982) and the 1/2 oz (1986).

Does the 2027 issue have a new design?

There is no information about a change. The 2027 issue carries the standard design with Steven Rosati's Charles III effigy and Walter Ott's maple leaf. As of November 2026 the Royal Canadian Mint has not announced design or specification changes.

How do you check the authenticity of such a small coin?

Weigh it on scales accurate to 0.01 g — it should be about 1.56 g — and measure the diameter of about 14 mm. Under a loupe, check the radial lines the series has carried on both sides since 2015.

Is the 1/20 oz gold coin VAT-exempt?

Yes. Gold bullion coins of 999.9 fineness are exempt from VAT in the EU under articles 344-356 of Directive 2006/112/EC, regardless of the coin's weight.
