1/4 oz Gold Maple Leaf 2027 — a quarter ounce of 999.9 gold on 20 mm

The 1/4 oz Maple Leaf Gold Coin 2027 contains 7.7759 g of 999.9 fine gold, measures 20 mm and carries a face value of 10 CAD. It is one of the oldest sizes in the series: the Royal Canadian Mint introduced it in November 1982, together with the 1/10 oz and in the same month it raised gold Maple Leaf fineness to 999.9.

A quarter ounce lets you buy gold in smaller amounts than the one-ounce coin, and four pieces make up a full ounce. The 2027 issue has the standard design and specifications of the series — the mint has announced no changes (as of November 2026).

1982 — 999.9 fineness and the quarter ounce in the same month

Gold Maple Leafs from 1979-1982 were 999 fine and existed only as a one-ounce coin. In November 1982 the Royal Canadian Mint took two steps at once: it raised the fineness to 999.9 and added the 1/4 and 1/10 oz fractions.

The mint states that its 1982 coin was the world's first gold bullion coin at 99.99% purity. The quarter ounce is therefore as old as the standard that still defines the series — both changes date to the same month.

The family kept growing: the 1/2 oz arrived in 1986 and the 1/20 oz in 1993. Special 99.999 issues, released since 2005, remained occasional variants. In 2015 the background gained radial lines, and in 2024 the obverse of gold bullion coins switched to the portrait of Charles III.

Obverse — King Charles III, designed by Steven Rosati

Steven Rosati's portrait of King Charles III has appeared on gold Maple Leaf bullion coins since 2024. Earlier quarter-ounce issues carry Elizabeth II, so coins from before and after the change of monarch are easy to tell apart — the 2027 issue shows the King.

The face value of this fraction is 10 CAD; the coin is legal tender in Canada, but its price follows the gold price rather than the face value. Radial lines fill the background behind the portrait.

Reverse — Walter Ott's maple leaf on 20 mm

The central motif is the maple leaf designed by Walter Ott. At 20 mm the drawing is smaller than on the ounce (30 mm) but follows the same layout, and the radial lines introduced in 2015 fill the background around the leaf.

For the one-ounce coin the Royal Canadian Mint describes an additional laser-micro-engraved maple leaf with the digits of the year. We have no confirmation of this element for the 1/4 oz, so we do not list it as a feature of this coin — here the radial lines, the 7.78 g weight and the 20 mm diameter serve for an authenticity check.

What to look for when buying

The 2027 issue — series data, not issue data: as of November 2026 the Royal Canadian Mint has not yet published its standard 2027 bullion page. Design and specifications are given as the series standard; any changes announced by the mint will be added to this description.

Four quarters and one ounce: four 1/4 oz coins contain 31.1036 g of gold, practically the same as one 1 oz coin. Striking four coins costs more, though, so the premium per gram is usually higher than on a full ounce — compare prices per gram of fine gold using the current gold price.

Soft 999.9 gold: on a 20 mm coin, scratches and fingerprints are easy to see. Handle the coin by the edge and store it in its sachet or a capsule.

A quarter ounce of gold — the Maple Leaf and other coins

Five widely traded 1/4 oz coins contain the same amount of fine gold (7.78 g). They differ in mint, fineness and face value — the currency of the face value shows the issuing country.

Coin Mint Fineness Fine gold Face value
Maple Leaf 1/4 oz Royal Canadian Mint 999.9 7.78 g 10 CAD
Vienna Philharmonic 1/4 oz Münze Österreich 999.9 7.78 g 25 EUR
Britannia 1/4 oz The Royal Mint 999.9 (since 2013) 7.78 g 25 GBP
Krugerrand 1/4 oz Rand Refinery / South African Mint 916.7 (22 carat) 7.78 g no face value
American Eagle 1/4 oz United States Mint 916.7 (22 carat) 7.78 g 10 USD

Three coins in the table are 999.9 fine and two are 916.7. At 916.7 the coin contains other metals and weighs more than its gold content; at 999.9 the coin weight and fine gold weight are practically equal.
