Why this coin

  • The maximum mintage is 5,000 coins worldwide — a small issue for a 1 oz bullion coin.
  • A micro-engraved letter is concealed in the reverse design and can only be seen under magnification — an anti-counterfeit feature.
  • 999.5 fine platinum with a 100 AUD face value issued by Australia.
  • It marks year eight of a twelve-year cycle — a 1 oz platinum Lunar III set can be built from 2020 onwards.
  • The Perth Mint is wholly owned by the Government of Western Australia and is listed as a refiner on the LBMA Good Delivery List.

The Lunar III series and platinum at the Perth Mint

The Perth Mint has issued Chinese zodiac coins since the 1990s. The current third cycle began in 2020 with the Year of the Mouse and runs for twelve years, to 2031. At the launch of Series III the mint added a 1 oz platinum bullion coin to the gold and silver line-up, so every zodiac animal since then has also appeared in platinum.

The 2027 Year of the Goat follows the 2026 Year of the Horse and is the eighth sign in the cycle. The Perth Mint released the coin on 8 September 2026, several months ahead of the start of the lunar year.

Obverse — King Charles III

The obverse bears the effigy of King Charles III by Dan Thorne, together with the weight, fineness and the 100 dollar face value.

Reverse — a goat in rugged mountain terrain

Wade Robinson portrays the goat standing proudly on a mountain plain, with rugged terrain underfoot and a solitary tree in the distance. The design also carries the Chinese character for goat, the inscription GOAT 2027 and the Perth Mint P mint mark. The Chinese character covers both goat and sheep, which is why the year is also called the Year of the Sheep.

The security feature of this issue is a micro-engraved letter hidden in the reverse design. It cannot be seen with the naked eye — checking it requires a loupe.

What to check before buying

  • Year and design: the 2026 platinum Horse from the same series has the same format but a different reverse. The 2027 coin is identified by the GOAT 2027 inscription and the goat motif.
  • The micro letter cannot be verified by eye — a loupe of at least 10x magnification helps when checking authenticity.
  • The secondary market for platinum coins is smaller than for gold coins — it is worth checking beforehand who buys back platinum and on what terms.
  • With a limited issue, the premium over metal value is often higher than for coins without a mintage cap.
  • The Perth Mint acrylic capsule protects the surface from scratches and fingerprints — the coin is best kept inside it.
