The Royal Mint — more than 1,100 years of history
The origins of the British Royal Mint go back to 886 and the mint of King Alfred the Great in London. For centuries the mint operated in the Tower of London — and between 1699 and 1727 its Master was Isaac Newton, who reformed the British monetary system and pursued counterfeiters. In 1968, ahead of decimalisation of the pound, production moved to a new works at Llantrisant in south Wales, where the mint operates to this day as a company wholly owned by HM Treasury.
For over 700 years the quality of striking has been verified by the Trial of the Pyx — one of the oldest control procedures in the world, in which an independent jury examines each year the fineness and weight of randomly selected coins. It is an element of credibility that no private refinery has.
Britannia — the flagship bullion coin
Issued since 1987, the Britannia is the mint's flagship gold coin: struck at 999.9 fineness since 2013 and, since 2021, carrying four anti-counterfeiting features — micro-text, a hidden motif, surface animation and latent image technology — which makes it one of the best protected bullion coins on the market. The figure of Britannia, a woman with a shield and trident, has symbolised Great Britain since Roman times. Britannia also comes in a silver version (999) and as Britannia bars.
The Sovereign — the same coin since 1817
The Sovereign is the longest continuously struck gold bullion coin in the world: since 1817 it has held, unchanged, 7.32 g of pure gold at 916.7 fineness. Alongside it you will also find the Half Sovereign (3.66 g of gold) and the Double Sovereign (14.63 g of gold).
