1/10 oz Australian Kangaroo — 99.99 fine, Perth Mint

A tenth of a troy ounce of 99.99 gold struck by the Perth Mint, weighing 3.111 g and measuring up to 16.60 mm across. Face value 15 Australian dollars, backed by the Australian government under the Currency Act 1965.

These are mixed-year coins. Because the reverse changes annually, a mixed-year order can bring several different kangaroo designs — which is the point for some buyers and irrelevant for others.

A design that changes every year

The series began in 1986 as the Australian Nugget, showing famous Australian gold nuggets on the reverse. From 1989 the kangaroo took over, and the Perth Mint has changed the reverse design every year since. That is unusual among bullion coins: a Krugerrand or a Maple Leaf looks the same whatever the date.

What the small size costs you

Striking a tenth ounce coin costs the mint nearly as much as striking a full ounce, and that cost sits on top of a tenth of the metal. The premium per gram is correspondingly high. In exchange you get a holding you can sell a piece at a time.

VAT and UK capital gains tax

HMRC treats a coin minted after 1800 as bullion gold if it is at least 900 thousandths fine, is or has been legal tender in its country of origin, and normally sells at no more than 180 per cent of the open market value of its gold (VAT Notice 701/21A). The Kangaroo is 99.99 fine, Australian legal tender and sold on the gold price, so it meets all three tests.

Capital gains tax is a separate matter. The UK exemption follows sterling legal tender, so it covers Sovereigns and Britannias but not an Australian coin. This is a statement of the published rule, not tax advice — your own position depends on your circumstances.

Questions buyers ask

Which year will I receive? Mixed-year stock ships as available, so the design and date vary.

Does the design really change every year? Yes, on the reverse. The obverse changes only when the monarch changes.

How much gold is in it? 3.111 g, a tenth of a troy ounce, at 99.99 fineness.

Why is the premium higher than on a one ounce coin? Because minting costs are spread over a tenth of the metal.
