No thickness is quoted for this coin. The figures circulating on dealer sites disagree with each other and do not reconcile with the published weight and diameter, so we leave the field out rather than print one.
The obverse carries the coat of arms of the Republic of Armenia — the quartered shield with its eagle and lion supporters — with the denomination, the year, the weight and the fineness, and REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA around the rim.
The reverse shows Noah’s Ark on the floodwaters, Mount Ararat and the rising sun behind it, and a dove carrying an olive branch in the foreground. Unlike an annually changing series, this motif stays the same from year to year.
The coin is issued by the Republic of Armenia and struck in Germany by Leipziger Edelmetallverarbeitung, the minting arm of Geiger Edelmetalle. Each piece is supplied in a sealed capsule with a numbered certificate.
A one gram coin is the least you can buy as a struck coin rather than a bar. The premium per gram is the highest of any size, and that is the whole cost of buying gold in this quantity. It is bought as a gift, a first purchase, or a very small step in a larger holding.
HMRC treats a coin minted after 1800 as bullion gold if it is at least 900 thousandths fine, is or has been legal tender in its country of origin, and normally sells at no more than 180 per cent of the open market value of its gold (VAT Notice 701/21A). The Noah’s Ark coin is 999.9 fine, Armenian legal tender and sold on the gold price, so it meets all three tests.
Capital gains tax is a separate matter. The UK exemption follows sterling legal tender, so it covers Sovereigns and Britannias but not an Armenian coin. This is a statement of the published rule, not tax advice — your own position depends on your circumstances.
Where is it made? In Germany, by Leipziger Edelmetallverarbeitung, on behalf of the Republic of Armenia.
Does the design change each year? No. The ark motif stays the same from year to year; only the date changes.
How much gold is in it? One gram, at 999.9 fineness.
Is it exempt from UK capital gains tax? No. That exemption follows sterling legal tender; this is an Armenian coin.
