2 g gold bar — Heraeus Kinebar, 999.9 fineness

A gold bar weighing 2 g at 999.9 fineness. It is a minted Heraeus bar carrying the Kinegram hologram security feature. One to a few gram bars are usually bought as a gift or a first purchase of metal — the entry point is low, but the markup over the gold price expressed as a percentage is the highest in the range. Two grams in payment-card format — the bar is thinner than half a millimetre, which at this weight calls for minting rather than casting.

What sets this bar apart

  • Kinegram hologram — the micro structure sits in the metal itself and cannot be reproduced by simple means.
  • 999.9 fineness — of 1000 parts of the alloy, 999.9 are pure gold.
  • Certificate inside the pack — the bar's serial number matches the number on the card, so no separate document is needed.
  • Familiar format — gram bars are accepted for buyback without appraisal as long as the blister is intact.

Kinebar — a hologram in the gold itself

The Kinebar is a Heraeus bar carrying a Kinegram security feature on the reverse. It is neither a sticker nor a foil: the micro structure is applied directly to the metal surface during production and produces the characteristic shifting shimmer as the bar is turned. The same technology is used in passports and banknotes.

The bar is minted rather than cast, measures 19.1 x 11.5 x 0.5 mm and ships in a blister the size of a payment card — 85 x 54 mm — with a certificate and serial number. The hologram survives only in the original packaging, as the surface is very thin and scratches easily.

Minted versus cast bars

Gram bars are punched and struck from rolled gold strip. The surface is smooth, the edges are straight, and every piece shares identical dimensions. Cast bars, common from a few hundred grams upwards, are made by pouring molten metal into a mould — hence their irregular, matte surface and slight variation in shape between pieces.

The difference shows up in price. Striking costs more than casting, so the markup over the metal price on gram bars sits higher than on large casts. In exchange a small bar is easier to sell as a whole, with no need to split a holding.

What to check before buying

The blister should stay closed. A bar taken out of its pack loses the link to its certificate and is sometimes valued lower on resale or has to be checked. Gold at 999.9 is soft — a fingerprint or scratch stays on the surface permanently.

In storage, avoid damp and pressure on the edges of the pack. The metal itself does not oxidise, but a cracked or lifted blister is the most common reason for a reduced buyback price on gram bars.

Frequently asked questions

How much pure gold is in a 2 g bar?

A fineness of 999.9 means that of 1000 parts of the alloy, 999.9 are pure gold. At 2 g the metal content is effectively the same as the total weight.

Does the bar come with a certificate?

Yes. The bar is sealed in a blister together with its certificate, and the serial number struck into the metal matches the number on the card.

Can the packaging be opened?

Technically yes, but it is not advisable. Outside the blister the bar loses the link to its certificate and is sometimes valued lower on resale or has to be checked.

Is VAT charged on gold bars?

In Poland gold meeting the conditions for bullion is exempt under Article 122 of the VAT Act. The exemption does not cover silver or platinum.

Do you buy bars back?

Yes, we buy back gold and silver. The buyback price follows the current metal quote and the condition of the packaging — an intact blister with certificate is valued highest.
