Why this coin

  • The middle size of the series: 7.78 g of silver — a quarter of the ounce and 2.5 times the tenth ounce.
  • Four coins add up to 31.1035 g, and each one can be sold on separately.
  • The “30” privy mark for the silver Britannia’s anniversary sets the 2027 coin apart from earlier years.
  • Latent image, surface animation and micro-text on a 22 mm coin.
  • 50p face value and legal tender status in the United Kingdom.

Where the quarter ounce fits in the Britannia series

The Britannia arrived in 1987 as a gold coin and silver joined in 1997 — hence the 2027 anniversary. Silver Britannias were then struck in 958 silver; The Royal Mint moved to 999 in 2013. Alongside the ounce, the mint has struck silver fractions of 1/2, 1/4, 1/10 and 1/20 oz.

Optical security features entered the series in 2021, and the portrait of King Charles III replaced that of the previous monarch on the obverse. The 2027 coin combines both with the anniversary 30 mark.

Obverse — Charles III on 22 mm

British sculptor Martin Jennings created the portrait of King Charles III that The Royal Mint uses across the Britannia range. On the quarter ounce the same effigy sits on a 22 mm field, and the 50p face value is symbolic next to the coin’s silver content.

Reverse 2027 — the number 30 in the wave texture

The reverse follows Philip Nathan’s design: Britannia with shield, olive branch and trident, standing for protection, peace and Britain’s bond with the sea. The anniversary change is in the background: the waves that usually form the surface animation are shaped in 2027 so the number 30 can be read within them, next to a wave privy mark carrying the same number.

The Royal Mint’s specification for the 1/4 oz lists three security features: a latent image that switches from a padlock to a trident as the angle changes, surface animation, and the micro-text DECUS ET TUTAMEN, legible under a loupe.

What to check before buying

At 22 mm the 30 mark and the micro-text are very small — a loupe of at least 10x helps. The smaller size means a higher premium per gram of silver than the one-ounce coin, as minting costs are spread over less metal. The coin has a bullion finish, so light contact marks are not a defect. The UK CGT exemption does not carry over to tax rules outside the United Kingdom.
