Copper is not a precious metal, and the tax treatment says so

This matters more than the specification. Copper carries VAT at the standard rate — 23 per cent in Poland, 20 per cent in the UK. There is no bullion exemption of the kind that applies to investment gold, because HMRC's definition in VAT Notice 701/21 covers gold and nothing else.

That tax charge is large relative to the metal value. A kilogram of copper is worth a small fraction of a kilogram of silver, so VAT is a much bigger share of what you pay. Anyone buying copper as a store of value should work that number out first.

How copper is actually priced

Copper is an industrial metal traded on the London Metal Exchange. The LME Copper contract is for Grade A copper, a lot size of 25 tonnes, quoted in US dollars per tonne and settled by physical delivery. There is no retail bullion market for copper comparable to the one for gold and silver — no LBMA good delivery list, no established two-way dealer market in small bars.

The practical consequence: buying back a one-kilogram copper bar is harder than buying back a one-kilogram silver bar, and the spread is wider. We are straightforward about that rather than presenting copper as a smaller version of silver.

Questions buyers ask

Is copper VAT free? No. The exemption applies to investment gold only, so copper is standard-rated.

How pure is this bar? StoneX publishes 9999/1000.

Is copper on the LBMA good delivery list? No. The LBMA lists cover gold and silver; copper trades on the LME under a separate contract.

Do you buy copper bars back? The market for small copper bars is much thinner than for gold and silver. Ask before you buy if buyback matters to you.
