1 oz Gold Bar Loxodonta Africana — Rand Refinery, 999.9 fine, CertiCard with QR code

The 1 oz Loxodonta Africana gold bar is a minted bar from Rand Refinery of South Africa, 999.9/1000 fine, measuring 41 × 24.6 × 1.64 mm, sealed in a tamper-evident CertiCard with a serial number and a RandTrack QR code. The troy ounce is the unit in which gold is quoted worldwide, so comparing the bar with the spot price needs no conversion. The reverse shows African elephants, from which the range takes its name: Loxodonta is the Latin genus name of the elephant.

Why this bar

  • 31.1035 g of 999.9 fine gold from a refinery that, as an LBMA referee, assays other refiners' gold.
  • The QR code on the card opens the refinery's record — authenticity can be checked without visiting a dealer.
  • Serial number struck on the bar and repeated on the card: two independent places to compare.
  • Dimensions 41 × 24.6 × 1.64 mm as stated by the refiner — easy to measure on delivery.
  • Part of a nine-weight range, so adding a smaller or larger bar in the same design does not mean changing refiner.

Rand Refinery and the Loxodonta range

Rand Refinery Limited was incorporated on 27 November 1920 as a private company owned by South African gold miners and remains privately held today, with no state or listed shareholder. Within the LBMA system it is an accredited Good Delivery refiner and, since 2004, one of five referees of that system — the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. Samples from refiners applying for accreditation are tested in its laboratory in Germiston, so the bar in this card comes from the examiner rather than the examined.

Rand Refinery has produced minted bars since 2012 in nine weights from 2 g to 100 g. The troy ounce is the only format in the range stated in ounces rather than grams. Each weight comes with one of two reverses: Corporate with the company logo, or Loxodonta with elephants. This card is the Loxodonta design in 1 oz.

Technology and security features

CertiCard. The 1 oz bar is sealed into a tamper-evident card whose window matches the 41 × 24.6 mm face of the bar. The card is printed with the weight, fineness and a serial number identical to the one struck on the bar. Opening the card leaves visible traces and reduces resale value.

Serial number. Two letters and six digits (format example: RR 005642), struck on the obverse below the Au 999.9 mark and repeated on the card.

RandTrack QR code. The current generation of the card carries a unique QR code linked to a secure digital record held by the refinery. Scanning it confirms authenticity, opens the digital certificate and production details, and the refinery also offers image-recognition validation of the bar. Earlier Loxodonta 1 oz cards had no code.

Obverse and reverse. Obverse: the refinery logo (a crucible pouring gold), the Au 999.9 mark and the serial number. Reverse: a procession of elephants — a cow with her calf — repeated across the full 41 × 24.6 mm face.

Formats and weights

The ounce sits in the middle of the Loxodonta range, between 20 g and 50 g. At GoldInvest24 you will also find the Rand Refinery 20 g gold bar and 100 g gold bar; the 10 g and 50 g sizes appear periodically. Thickness does not grow in step with weight — 1 oz (1.64 mm) is thinner than 20 g (1.84 mm). All gold formats are listed in the gold bars category.

What to check when buying

A troy ounce is 31.1035 g. The 1 oz Rand Refinery bar is thinner than the 20 g version (1.64 mm against 1.84 mm) but has the larger face — the longest edge of any format up to 50 g. On delivery, check that the CertiCard film lies flat along the long edges of the window. The serial number on the bar and on the card must be identical.

Why GoldInvest24

GoldInvest24 sells 1 oz Rand Refinery bars only in intact CertiCards from the refinery and compares the serial number on the bar with the card before dispatch. Parcels are insured and packed with no indication of the contents. The current gold price per ounce and per gram is shown on the gold price page.

Frequently asked questions

How much gold does the 1 oz Rand Refinery bar contain?

Exactly 31.1035 g of 999.9/1000 fine gold, i.e. one troy ounce. That is the unit in which the gold price is quoted, so comparing the bar price with spot needs no conversion.

What are the dimensions of the 1 oz Loxodonta bar?

41 × 24.6 mm at 1.64 mm thick. It is thinner than the 20 g bar from the same range but has the larger face.

What is the QR code on the card for?

The QR code leads to a secure digital record in the refinery's RandTrack system. After scanning you can confirm authenticity, download the digital certificate and check production details. The refinery also offers validation by image recognition.

How does this card differ from the earlier Loxodonta 1 oz bar?

The bar is the same — 999.9 fine, 31.1035 g, Loxodonta design. The difference is the packaging: the current CertiCard carries the RandTrack QR code, which earlier cards with only a serial number did not have.

Is Rand Refinery part of the LBMA system?

Yes. Rand Refinery is an accredited LBMA Good Delivery refiner and, since 2004, one of five LBMA referees worldwide — the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. A referee tests the gold of other refiners applying for accreditation.

Is the 1 oz bar exempt from VAT?

Yes. A 999.9 fine gold bar is gold bullion within the meaning of Article 344 of Directive 2006/112/EC and its sale is VAT-exempt. The exemption applies to gold — not to silver, platinum or accessories.
