The Krugerrand — the first modern bullion coin
The gold Krugerrand was launched in 1967 as the first gold coin designed as a mass product for private buyers. Around 1980 it accounted for most of the world trade in gold coins, and its format was later followed by the Maple Leaf, American Eagle and Vienna Philharmonic.
The 2017 silver version keeps the original design but is larger and struck in 999 fine silver. Krugerrands are distributed through Rand Refinery.
Obverse and reverse
The obverse shows Paul Kruger, 19th-century president of the South African Republic, after a design by Otto Schultz; the coin takes its name from him and from the rand. The reverse shows a springbok, the national animal of South Africa, designed by Coert Steynberg.
Both designs have been unchanged since the first issue, so the year does not affect the appearance of the coin.
Mixed years — what you receive
The year depends on stock and cannot be chosen. Weight, fineness, face value and diameter are the same in every year. The price is below that of the Krugerrand 2026 because there is no premium for the current issue.
VAT — margin scheme
Silver is not VAT exempt; the exemption in Article 122 of the Polish VAT Act covers gold bullion only. Mixed-year silver Krugerrands are sold under the VAT margin scheme (Article 120): tax applies to the dealer margin only and is not shown on the invoice. Current-year coins are sold at 23%.
Care
Silver develops toning over time, first golden, later grey or bluish. Weight and fineness are unaffected, but an even surface is valued higher at resale. Keep the coin dry and do not clean it with silver paste.
