Why this bar

  • 100 g of 999.9 fine gold from a refinery that, as an LBMA referee, assays other refiners' gold.
  • The QR code on the card opens the refinery's record — authenticity can be checked without visiting a dealer.
  • Serial number struck on the bar and repeated on the card: two independent places to compare.
  • Dimensions 47.5 × 28.5 × 3.91 mm as stated by the refiner — easy to measure on delivery.
  • Part of a nine-weight range, so adding a smaller or larger bar in the same design does not mean changing refiner.

Rand Refinery and the Loxodonta range

Rand Refinery Limited is a refinery in Germiston, South Africa, incorporated on 27 November 1920 and still privately held, controlled by mining companies. It is an accredited LBMA Good Delivery refiner, and in 2004 the LBMA appointed it a referee of the system — one of five such refineries worldwide and the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. The 100 g bar from this refinery is therefore the product of a body that itself assays other refiners' gold before they are admitted.

100 g is the top of Rand Refinery's minted range, produced since 2012 in nine weights starting at 2 g. The reverse comes in two designs: Corporate and Loxodonta; this card is the Loxodonta.

Technology and security features

CertiCard. The 100 g bar (3.91 mm thick) is sealed in a tamper-evident card printed with the weight, fineness and a serial number identical to the one on the bar. The seal cannot be restored once opened, and a bar without its card loses value on resale.

Serial number. Two letters and six digits (format like RR 005642), on the obverse below Au 999.9 and on the card.

RandTrack QR code. The unique QR code on the card opens the refinery's digital record — authenticity, digital certificate, production details and image-recognition validation. For a bar holding 100 g of gold this is the main difference from the previous Loxodonta card, which carried only a number.

Obverse and reverse. Obverse with the refinery logo (crucible and stream of gold), the Au 999.9 mark and the serial number. Reverse, 47.5 × 28.5 mm: a procession of African elephants, cow with calf, on the largest face of any minted bar in the range.

Formats and weights

100 g is the upper limit of Rand Refinery's minted bars. Smaller Loxodonta formats at GoldInvest24: 1 oz and 20 g; the 50 g and 10 g sizes from this range are available periodically. At 3.91 mm thick, the 100 g bar weighs as much as five 20 g bars and its price per gram is usually the lowest in the range. Other refiners' 100 g and larger formats are in the gold bars category.

What to check when buying

The 100 g bar is 3.91 mm thick — more than twice the 1 oz — and has real heft in the hand. It is also the format with the smallest gap between metal price and bar price in the range, but it cannot be sold in parts: 100 g is sold whole. If you plan to sell gradually, compare it with five 20 g bars. The CertiCard must be intact and the RR + 6-digit number identical on bar and card.

Frequently asked questions

What are the dimensions of the 100 g Rand Refinery gold bar?

47.5 × 28.5 mm at 3.91 mm thick. It is the thickest bar in Rand Refinery's minted range — for comparison, 1 oz is 1.64 mm and 50 g is 2.23 mm.

How many ounces is 100 g of gold?

100 g is 3.2151 troy ounces. The 100 g bar therefore holds a little over three ounces of 999.9 fine gold.

What is the QR code on the card for?

The QR code leads to a secure digital record in the refinery's RandTrack system. After scanning you can confirm authenticity, download the digital certificate and check production details. Image-recognition validation is also available.

How does this card differ from the earlier 100 g Loxodonta bar?

Metal and design are the same. The difference is the packaging: the current CertiCard carries a printed RandTrack QR code, which the older card did not have.

One 100 g bar or five 20 g bars?

A single 100 g bar usually has the lower price per gram but is sold whole. Five 20 g bars cost more in total but can be sold one at a time. It is a question of flexibility, not of gold quality — fineness and refiner are identical.

Is Rand Refinery part of the LBMA system?

Yes. Rand Refinery is an accredited LBMA Good Delivery refiner and, since 2004, one of five LBMA referees worldwide, the only one in the Southern Hemisphere.

Is the 100 g bar exempt from VAT?

Yes. A 999.9 fine gold bar is gold bullion under Article 344 of Directive 2006/112/EC and is VAT-exempt. The exemption applies to gold, not to silver or platinum.
