The Royal Tudor Beasts — ten beasts from Hampton Court

The Royal Tudor Beasts series reproduces the stone figures that flank the moat bridge at Hampton Court Palace. The sculptures depict heraldic animals of the Tudors and the ancestors of Henry VIII. The Royal Mint issued ten bullion releases in the series.

The Seymour Panther is the final beast. The history of this badge is unusual: it began as Anne Boleyn's leopard and, after her execution, was altered into a panther and assigned to Jane Seymour, Henry VIII's third wife. In heraldry the panther stands for courage, strength and loyalty.

Reverse and obverse

David Lawrence's reverse shows the Seymour Panther in a heraldic pose after the stone figure at Hampton Court. The obverse carries the official effigy of King Charles III by Martin Jennings — the portrait the Royal Mint has used since 2022. The edge is reeded.

Two ounces of silver on a 38.61 mm flan gives the largest surface of the three versions. It is bought mainly by people who care about the design itself rather than the metal content — silver costs a fraction of gold and carries 23 percent VAT.

Tax status of Royal Mint coins

Royal Mint bullion coins are legal tender in the United Kingdom and are therefore exempt from Capital Gains Tax there. The exemption applies within the UK and to UK taxpayers — in Poland, taxation follows national rules.

In Poland gold meeting the conditions for bullion is exempt from VAT under Article 122 of the VAT Act. Silver is not covered — its price includes 23 percent VAT.

What to check before buying

Royal Mint Tudor Beasts bullion coins ship in mint tubes, without individual capsules and without a paper certificate. The proof versions with a box and certificate are a separate and considerably more expensive product — not this item.

The bullion surface is a matte-and-mirror finish and shows fingerprints readily. Handle the coin by the edge or with gloves; marks on 999.9 gold stay permanently.
