Why this bar

  • 20 g of 999.9 fine gold from a refinery that, as an LBMA referee, assays other refiners' gold.
  • The QR code on the card opens the refinery's record — authenticity can be checked without visiting a dealer.
  • Serial number struck on the bar and repeated on the card: two independent places to compare.
  • Dimensions 31 × 18.6 × 1.84 mm as stated by the refiner — easy to measure on delivery.
  • Part of a nine-weight range, so adding a smaller or larger bar in the same design does not mean changing refiner.

Rand Refinery and the Loxodonta range

The bar is made by Rand Refinery Limited of Germiston near Johannesburg — incorporated on 27 November 1920, privately held, with South African mining companies as shareholders. Since 2004 it has been one of five referees of the LBMA Good Delivery system (the only referee in the Southern Hemisphere) and is itself an accredited Good Delivery refiner. A referee assays gold samples from refiners seeking accreditation, so the quality of its own bars is a condition of that role rather than a marketing claim.

The 20 g format belongs to the minted range introduced in 2012, which has nine weights: 2 g, 2.5 g, 5 g, 8 g, 10 g, 20 g, 1 oz, 50 g and 100 g. Twenty grams is the only weight between 10 g and the ounce. The reverse comes as Corporate (logo) or Loxodonta (elephants) — this card is the Loxodonta.

Technology and security features

CertiCard. The 20 g bar, 31 × 18.6 mm, is sealed in a card printed with the weight, fineness and serial number. At this weight the card is a relatively large part of the product, so the condition of the seal carries more weight on resale than with 100 g. The card should not be opened.

Serial number. Format: two letters, six digits (e.g. RR 005642). It appears on the obverse below the fineness mark and on the card — the two must be identical.

RandTrack QR code. The QR code printed on the card points to the refinery's digital record: confirmation of authenticity, a digital certificate and production details. Older 20 g Loxodonta cards carried only a serial number, with no code.

Obverse and reverse. Obverse: the crucible pouring gold (Rand Refinery logo), Au 999.9 and the serial number. Reverse: the cow-and-calf motif repeated; the 31 × 18.6 mm face holds fewer repeats than the 1 oz or 100 g bars.

Formats and weights

20 g is the smallest of the three Loxodonta weights GoldInvest24 stocks alongside 1 oz and 100 g; the 10 g and 50 g sizes from this range are available periodically. Five 20 g bars equal one 100 g bar in weight, at a higher combined price but with the option of selling in parts. Other weights and refiners can be compared in the gold bars category.

What to check when buying

At 20 g the packaging makes up a larger share of what you pay for than at 100 g, so the intact state of the CertiCard matters more on resale. The 20 g bar is 1.84 mm thick — more than the 1 oz version (1.64 mm) despite the lower weight: that is the result of the smaller face, not a different fineness. The RR + 6-digit serial number must match on the bar and the card.

Why GoldInvest24

We ship 20 g Rand Refinery bars in their original sealed CertiCards after checking that the serial numbers on the bar and card match. Parcels are insured and discreet. We deal only in bars from LBMA-accredited refiners; the gold price per gram is on the gold price page.

Frequently asked questions

What does the 20 g Rand Refinery gold bar weigh and measure?

20.00 g of 999.9/1000 fine gold in a 31 × 18.6 mm format, 1.84 mm thick. It is thicker than the 1 oz bar from the same range because its face is smaller.

Is 20 g much less than an ounce?

A troy ounce is 31.1035 g, so a 20 g bar holds about 64 percent of an ounce. The price per gram is usually slightly higher than for 1 oz and 100 g — typical of smaller weights.

How does the QR code on the CertiCard work?

The QR code leads to a secure digital record in the refinery's RandTrack system. After scanning you can confirm authenticity, download the digital certificate and check the bar's production details.

How does this card differ from the previous 20 g Loxodonta bar?

Metal and design are unchanged. The packaging has changed: the current CertiCard carries the RandTrack QR code, which the older card with only a serial number did not have.

Who makes this bar and what is the refiner's status?

Rand Refinery of South Africa, incorporated in 1920. It is an accredited LBMA Good Delivery refiner and, since 2004, one of five LBMA referees worldwide.

Is the 20 g bar exempt from VAT?

Yes. 999.9 fine gold in bar form is gold bullion under Article 344 of Directive 2006/112/EC and is VAT-exempt. The exemption does not cover silver, platinum or accessories.
