Grams, not ounces
Until 2015 the Panda was struck in troy ounces. From 2016 the series moved to metric weights, which is why the sizes run 1 g, 3 g, 8 g, 15 g and 30 g. A 30 g coin holds slightly less gold than a one-ounce coin (31.1035 g) — about 3.5 per cent less — and a 15 g coin slightly less than half an ounce (15.552 g). Compare on price per gram rather than per coin.
The design
The obverse carries the Temple of Heaven in Beijing with the name of the People's Republic of China and the year of issue. That side stays the same across the whole series.
The reverse carries a panda, drawn afresh for each year. That annual change is what separates the Panda from every other bullion coin and why dated Pandas are collected as well as held for the metal.
VAT and UK capital gains tax
HMRC treats a coin minted after 1800 as investment gold if it is at least 900 thousandths fine, is or has been legal tender in its country of origin, and normally sells at no more than 180 per cent of the open market value of its gold (VAT Notice 701/21A). At 999 fine and Chinese legal tender, this coin falls inside the exemption for investment gold.
Capital gains tax is separate: the UK exemption follows sterling legal tender, so it covers Sovereigns and Britannias but not a Chinese coin. This is the published rule, not tax advice — your own position depends on your circumstances.
Questions buyers ask
Does the reverse really change every year? Yes. It is the defining feature of the series.
Is a 30 g Panda the same as a one-ounce coin? No. A troy ounce is 31.1035 g, so a 30 g Panda holds about 3.5 per cent less gold.
Is it VAT free in the UK? It meets HMRC's tests for an investment gold coin. It is not exempt from capital gains tax.
