Argor-Heraeus — the Mendrisio refinery
Argor-Heraeus was founded in 1951 in Chiasso as a precious metals refinery in the canton of Ticino and has been based in Mendrisio since 1986. Since April 2017 it has been wholly owned by Heraeus Precious Metals, while its bars are still stamped Argor-Heraeus. The refinery is one of seven acting as LBMA Good Delivery referees.
Technology and security features
The bar is made by pouring molten silver into a mould, which gives it a slightly uneven surface and rounded edges; individual bars may differ marginally in shape. The logo, refinery name, 999 fineness and weight are stamped directly into the metal.
The producer describes this line as certified by its own Sworn Assayer. The 999 fineness is thus stated by the refinery whose name appears on the bar.
Formats and weights
Argor-Heraeus lists silver in two technologies. Minted bars come in 1 oz, 10 g and 100 g; cast bars in 250 g, 500 g, 1000 g and 5000 g. The refinery also produces an unusual 15 kg bar. The 500 g size is twice the weight of the 250 g bar and half that of the kilo bar.
What to consider before buying
- Appearance depends on the batch. Dealers note that finish and packaging (sealed in plastic or without it) can vary between deliveries.
- A serial number is not guaranteed. Trade sources give conflicting information on numbering for 500 g bars.
- The bar is sold as one piece. If you need more flexibility, two 250 g bars are an option.

How does it differ from the 500 g Heraeus bar?
